I saw Mamma Mia! The Movie
Jul. 16th, 2008 08:52 amThree days ago, I saw Mamma Mia! Hollywood is totally trying to be Bollywood now; I love it.

I absolutely loved this feel-fantastic film. Three things I loved in particular:
1) Bollywood conventions imported into a Hollywood movie. Big troupes of girls dancing behind the lead girl, troupes of boys behind the lead boy, breaking into song every few moments. I realise this is probably taken straight from the stage musical which, in turn, may itself be inspired by Bollywood, who knows. Anyway, this felt rather Bollywoody to me.
2) Middle-aged women rool!
I loved the fact that of the 8 main characters, 6 were over the age of 45 -- at least! The way the mature ladies were treated in this film is just fabulous. They danced and sang with absolute zest, and in one scene put the youngsters in their place. At the same time, we were allowed to ogle youthful flesh galore: boys stripping off their shirts with no moment's notice and cavorting nipple-stiffingly upon the beaches. *growl*
3) James Bond sings!
What can you say? By the time, Pierce Brosnan burst into (very bad!) song, I was just laughing and laughing in my seat. He can't sing; he sings with gusto; er schmettert das Lied aus sich 'raus: grandios!
Was will man mehr? What more could you want?
I want to see it again!!!! Gimme gimme gimme.
Oh, and I was not an Abba fan in the 70s but, by the end of the film, I was humming along. To my surprise, I knew nearly every single song -- proof to the power of media penetration by osmosis.
