I'm back from Holland and Germany, and on Thursday I leave again for France. 'tis the holiday season.

Germany and the Netherlands were HOT. 32 degrees celsius and about 95 per cent humidity: very odd. Now we're back to normal, i.e. white sky, drizzly rain and vest weather. I got very brown and we all had sunburns!

I washed t'son's ipod!

The next day, it revived!!

Apple roolz.

Also, I feel a bit better and not so low. *keeps fingers crossed*

Any ideas about what to do over the next few days? ;-)

P.S.
My current internet enchantments:

blogtalkradio

flylady

And the newest: missus smarty pants. This one's a bit out of character for me (so far): it's a fashion site, about 'how to find your style'. I actually signed up for a personal profile in my 'body type' and am planning to acquire a bra! (I've not worn a bra since t'birth of t'ten-year-old, more or less.) I also bought my first high-heel shoes in six years!!

My high-heel shoes!!

I know. I've gone weird. This is what depression does to you.

*flounces off* (If I can manage not to trip over my heels.)

Heeee, I have those same shoes. Except mine were from Clarks. They are very comfy as well as making me feel like a 1930s society lady.

Matthew Bellamy, small rock god, singer/guitarist/pianist/genius of Muse. Your sons probably know who he is. I am mildly obsessed with him.

PS also, did you take the ferry to the continent? Circe & I are doing that this week from Harwich. If so how was it?

Harwich ferry is great! It takes 7 hours or so, so the thing to do is to get a cabin. I would really, really recommend this: get a cabin. You can get it on the ferry itself although if you don't book ahead, the ones with a window may be all gone. They are not expensive; you get clean sheets and blankets, an enusite bathroom with loo and shower (!), and powerpoints for laptops and whatnot. You can then dump your stuff there and go to the cafeteria and outdoor deck as you like -- but can escape from the unwashed masses.

Without the cabin, the Harwich ferry is sort of hell.

Yes! We do have a cabin! I don't think we have a window, which is a bit sad. C is convinced there will be duty free shopping and from what the Stena Line brochure said there seems to be "entertainment". Please describe more, it could be quite hilarious.

Let me know how cabin without window is! We haven't tried it; I peeked into one of them: looks just like the windowed ones except without a window, so quite luxurious. There is a shop; not sure about actually wanting to buy anything from it. No, hang on, I did once buy an Esprit T-shirt which, come to think of it, I am wearing as I type! What boredom and idleness makes you do... "Entertainment" is a cinema with 3 films one of which starts as soon as your feet hit the ship so you have to be FAST. When we were on board, they were Mamma mia, Indiana Jones and one that I have forgotten. I tend to get queasy in on-board cinemas so have stopped going, and t'son once was literally sick onto the carpet in the cinema (this may have been due to the film, however, it was Eragon).

There are also two gaming tables (!! den of sin!) with roulette and blackjack, and there is 'tweaky tweaky man', a strange bearded man of undefined age who wears odd clothes, tweakies balloons into amusing shapes and puts on a brutal Punch and Judy show for the kiddies.

There is also a strip show.

No, I lie. Alas, there isn't. *snorfle*

I have no pictures to post as I have lost the re-charging cable for my camera and am unable to take photos!!

I am starting to be fed up with the digital revolution. Today, I bought an old-fashioned retro telephone that just plugs into the wall with a curly cord attaching receiver to ear. The whole base station is broken thing, and hunting handsets around the house was getting on my nerves.

I'm going to have to buy a new charging cable! Grr.

I drove past YOUR TOWN on the way back from Harwich! I also, at a party recently, met some people who live in MY TOWN but who are major fans of the football team of YOUR TOWN.

I am also reading Neil Gaiman's short stories. Some of them are about vampires which also reminded me of YOUR TOWN.

I feel so... connected! :D

I'm having problems with my vampires. They know who they are, but they can't decide what story they want to be in.

Can't you just throw them in and see what they do? Never mind what story? I'm really keen on them now! They are better than Neil Gaiman's!! Neil Gaiman's vampires are too dark and tormented. I mean, vampire, dark, tormented -- how old is that? *yawns* Also, they don't work in bookshops.

Why thank you! :) I'm not sure I can remember any Neil Gaiman vampires, so I can't comment, although I do like some of his short stories. My vampires are light and tormented. You have to torment characters in books, that's just the way it is. My most tormented character is the agarophobic historian, and he's not a vampire at all.

David Mitchell said in an interview (and a lot of other authors say this as well; I've just forgotten where and when) that the best way to generate plot is to invent a character the readers like and to make awful things happen to that character. Just to confirm your views about fiction and torment. :-)
