Now, I have read many lovely and yummy and sexy and angsty John Sheppard/Rodney McKay fics, some by my very favouritest authoresses in all fandommes. But: too much of a good thing!!

Just now I learned of a thing called SGA Big Bang (how had I not known of this before? perhaps I had but just forgotten. Is the onset of "second childhood"? Argh. And they have one for Harry/Draco, too! *digresses)

It seems to me that when I entered this fandom way back when in the days of series 2, there used to be a lot more variety in the pairings within SGA fics. In the Big Bang, it's John/Rodney, Rodney/John, McKay/Sheppard, Sheppard/McKay all the bloody way.

What is with that? Is it just that Big Bang has prompts and rules wot i know nothing about so that, of course, it's a McShepShip? Or has the fandom, by increments, veered from its former glorious ensemble-cast slashfest into mono-pairing, à la Sentinel or, um, Hetty Wainthropp?

My very first lovelust fic in this fandom was McKay/Zelenka. I just can't fathom the exclusivity of the McShep-bug.

P.S. Any good new wraith fic out there?? (Not crack!)

The first SGA Big Bang was only for McKay/Sheppard stories (in the way that the Harry/Draco Big Bang is . . . well, only for Harry and Draco stories). This year it was considerably wider - there were many more ships. But if you're looking at the website, you're going to see more McKay/Sheppard than anything else because it hosts all the stories from two years, including the McKay/Sheppard first.

Aha! I understand! Because, of course, if I wanted Harry/Draco and went to a specific H/D site, that's, well, what I would want to see. :-) Similarly, if I see a McShep site, I will not be aghast at finding, well, ShepKay. This explains it. Although I think I have a hunch that the McShep has increased fandomwide, beyond the confines of SGA. I haven't done a statistical analysis, mind you. And don't goad me into attempting one! It may well lead to MADNESS.

Also, in my head, Rodney is so totally straight. And the ending of 5.06 made me quite sillily happy. (The episode that sucked me into canon [as opposed to into fanon] was Cadman inside Rodney's head, and somehow I kept finding myself writing het for SGA. McKayish het! *g*)

If I recall correctly, the first SGA Big Bang was open to multiple pairings but, in the end, all the stories that were completed happened to be McKay/Sheppard.

I'm being too lazy to go through all the postings, and it wasn't something I paid attention to beyond "ooh, new stories", so it's possible it changed at some point, but the original rules I found on quick search seems to back me up.

Yes, that's what I recall too. There were more pairings signed up but they defaulted.

As for the rest: after I just read the hundred or so SPN/J2 Big Bang stories where there may have been less than a handful other pairings and maybe a dozen gen, I found the SGA Big Bang this year surprisingly varied.

But as always YMMV depending where you're coming from and what you're looking for. Given all the fandoms I've been in, SGA is far from the most OTP specific--though it may be the most OTP for any ensemble show...

The fandom is very much mono-pairing and that's one reason why I had to abandon ship, literally and figuratively. I'm not surprised that there is little to no variety in the Big Bang.

I know some SGA fan writers and they were fairly insistent that the "SGA Big Bang" should allow other pairings (if they'd called it McShep Big Bang that wouldn't have been such a big deal). Anyway, there's a fabulous Ronan/John that I betaed, it's Push Until It Holds and some other pairings as well.
