I am learning things from this academic book by Kristin Thompson about Lord of the Rings that I never thought I would. I am learning new things about my fandom-as-was! I am discovering that I lived in a niche of a much vaster, much wider fandom than even I had an inkling of, with people being obsessed with much rarer people even than I was.

So. Just to check whether I am the only one whom this passed by.

Random Hot Elf in the Council of Elrond scene. Bret McKenzie. I ficc'd about him once. ;) He's on Flight of the Conchords now, which is a show on HBO, and a quite successful band in New Zealand.

Yes, you knew it! I didn't know it! The name 'figwit' had faint resonance in my head but I didn't know. And he's rare! And then I boggled and near fell off my chair and had to read the page out to t'sons because they are Big Conchord Fans, and in our household we know all of their songs practically off by heart and quote the HBO show line by line.

One of the dark haired elves at the council of elrond- named Figwit for "Frodo is great, who is that?" (or something like that) because the camera pans over him during/after his speech.

He shows up again when the elves are leaving for the shores, when Arwen turns her horse around.

Also, the guy from Flight of the Conchords!

Omg you knew! You knew it all! And to think that in our house we have been Conchord fans for years and practically know their songs by heart and can speak along to the HBO dialogue. And here I am, a putative rare pairings lover... And I did not know that Bret McKenzie was an elf!!

I's something like "Fuck Elijah is Great... Who Is That?" said during the Council of Elrond. And the guy they're talking about is half of Flight of the Choncords, HBO series, which has a running thing about their Fan Club, Bret something.

Figwit is a dark haired elf who at one point acts as Arwen's travel companion, and is totally ineffectual at stopping her from running off.

And his name stands for "Frodo Is Great . . . Who Is That?"

When they were bored in Rivendell - and they were often bored because there weren't enough books to read or orcs to shoot during those long, loooong years before the Ring War - Figwit and Legolas killed the time playing "Mirror, mirror on the wall who's the prettiest of them all?" and having hot elf!sex in front of the mirror :-)
