Remember how there was the possibility of me and t'family moving to Palo Alto in California because t'h might be offered a job at Stanford University? Here's an update on that, except I'm calling it a downdate because the way they do things over at Stanford is weirdly slow.

Basically: t'h went over for the interview but still hasn't received an official offer. Apparently, it's now sitting on some dean's or provost's desk and 'may' be sent in December. This has now been going on for over 1 1/2 years!

You Americans do things very weirdly. Here in the UK, you apply for a job, go for the interview and often get told on the very day of the interview yes or no. And then you take a few days to decide, and that's that. But apparently, even when (if?) t'h finally gets an offer, this is (as we are told) only the beginning! Then the 'negotiations' start! Which seems to me basically a wrangling for money, research money, research time, accessories (research assistant, health stuff, spouse deal [that's me], housing help, and I can't remember what else).

Well. As you may also know, this whole Stanford thing sent me into a tailspin back in April and plunged me into the worst depression I've ever experienced. Now, however, I feel much more positive! What do you know, eh?

Here I've been spending 80 pounds a pop on cognitive behavioural therapy and all it needed was 70 million American citizens voting for the president-elect. Why didn't I think of this back in April?

Also, I still think with gratitude of all you lovely people who posted helpful thoughts and advice!

Does he really want to go?

We're in the process of hiring new professors right now, it's not an easy thing to do. Especially as both the American and the German academic system somehow have to be integrated...

T'h is conflicted but, I think, basically pro.

Well, Stanford's endowment just lost several billion dollars, so it may go extra-slow for a while. I hope it works out, for a few years at least.

They froze all new appointments that hadn't yet progressed very far but apparently this one was deemed to have progressd far enough.

We shall see. It's not for a few years; it's for life! that's what's difficult.

I think the process depends on the university. One of my friends is on the search committee for her uni, and they make decisions pretty quickly, certainly much more quickly than this process.

Glad you're feeling better about the whole thing!
