Merlin: a new fandom
Dec. 14th, 2008 11:18 amThis new fandom is fun. Not 100 percent fun as it seems to be a) one-pairing, b) one-pov, c) only pretty and not enough manly, d) based on television wot i would have to watch to gain insight into canon and e) bereft of any Bollywood stars.
However! It makes up for its shortcomings by having a) much ust, b) someone who isRon Weasley magic, c) someone who is lordly, d) thereby enabling much servant/master, bottom/top, bottom turns top, angsty stuff, e) a Muggle magic-hating king, f) thereby enabling more angsting and outing and mapping of homosexuality-in-closet onto magic-in-wardrobe, g) a yaoi/manga dichotomy of black-haired/blond, h) hurt/comfort in the guise of Rodney-like saving-the-lord's-life-all-the-time through scientific magical means, h) a canon that can easily be expanded!
At the moment I am expanding the canon by reading Chrétien de Troyes's Lancelot legend. I don't like TV but I do like literature! Fandom is so educational!
And by expanding the canon, I get me the manly (because hey, in the spirit of Harry-Potteresque future!fic, the boys can be any age, from 21 to 58, or in the case of Merlin, perhaps even 102?) and I get me the beyond-the-one-pairing (Lancelot, Galahad, Percival, yum yum).
Well, sort of manly. Burne-Jones was incapable of painting a truly Rugged Man but hey.

Date: 2008-12-14 11:48 pm (UTC)I did accidentally watch that finale ep, due to being hungover and too spaced-out to turn the telly off (also accidentally watched the EastEnders omnibus), and found it quite boring. I like different interpretations of the Arthurian myths, but this one really made me yawn. I can see the attraction ficwise though.
