Birthday ficlet for
In a tree
by Lobelia
Karl and Harry sat in a tree. It was a plum tree. Or perhaps a guava tree. They didn't know. They were not experts on stone fruit arboriculture. At any rate, the fruit was tough and not nice to eat. They had tried. Then they had stopped.
Now they just sat there, dangling their feet. Harry said that his lower spine hurt from having twisted it on the way up. Karl said to shut up and be quiet, he needed to think. Harry asked what he needed to think about. Karl said nothing but his pupils swivelled and fastened on Harry's finger.
"That?" said Harry. "That bothers you?"
"No," said Karl. "Why should it bother me?"
"It's gold," said Harry and held up his hand. "It's 14 carat. It's got a date inscribed on the inside of it. The date is the fifth of December."
"I don't care about that date." Karl plucked a twig and chewed on it. A bird tweeted.
"It's not a particularly significant ring. It's not The One Ring. It might make me invisible, though."
"You'll never be invisible," said Karl past his twig. "Not to me." He furrowed his brow and stared into the distance so hard that his eyes began to water. The sun was setting on the Pacific's horizon.
"You shouldn't look into the sun," said Harry. "It might make you blind. It could make your eyes weep."
Karl spat out the twig. "Let me try it on."
Harry looked at his hand. "Okay," he said. He looked at his hand some more. "All right," he said. "I'm not sure I can get it off," he said.
"Try butter," said Karl and started to climb down the tree.
"Hey," said Harry. He rubbed his finger and wriggled the ring back and forth. He wrenched the ring off his finger. "Here."
Karl stopped and perched on a branch below Harry. He slipped the ring onto his ring finger but it wouldn't fit. He slipped it onto his little finger but it was loose. He looked at the ring close up, twirled it between his fingers, held it up so that the sun flashed orange on its flanks.
Karl popped the ring into his mouth.
"Oh, for goodness..." said Harry.
Karl said nothing.
"Okay, okay," said Harry.
He lowered himself onto Karl's branch.
"You're so predictable," said Harry. "My back hurts."
Karl pulled an annoyed pout.
Harry grabbed hold of Karl's neck to hold him still. He leant forwards and bit Karl's top lip. Then he bit Karl's bottom lip. Then he bit both lips at once.
Karl opened his mouth. Harry parted his lips. The ring slid out and onto Harry's tongue.
"Fits fine now," said Harry. The ring slithered easily onto his fourth finger.
"Shit, Harry," murmured Karl.
THE END.
P.S. Inspired by a real-life marriage.
