For those of you who are on it (Facebook, that is), what do you get out of it? And what is its point? Is it true that one can only make very short posts and never ramble in several paragraphs? And if that is the case, why not twitter?

I've got half a toe in the V of the V and was just wondering. Also, I don't know anybody there, and then again, do I want to know anybody?? Scary people from my past lurk and have asked to Freind me and I'm having to Ignore them because there seems to be no custom filter facility.

In funner news:

• I am very well and not depressed. The CBT has really worked! So far!

• I am writing my book! By longhand, in a cheap Sainsbury A4 notepad. What a liberation!

• I got myself an external hard drive and backed up everything in 1 h 58 min. Wow! No more fear of burglars or floods or dropping t'laptop on its face.

• I am reading Q&A by Vikas Swarup, the novel wot the film Slumdog Millionaire is based on, and am enjoying it moreishly. A rollick of a read.

• I am conflicted! Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (see icon) is coming on again at our local cinema! (Unheard of! Twice in a row!) And now I'm almost tempted to cancel an afternoon tea date on Sunday so that I can watch it again. But this would be Terrible and Thwarting Old Friends so I can't possibly do it but oh, I am so tempted.

Because I loveloveadore that film so much. I've been playing it back in my head ever since I saw it last Sunday, and mainlining the soundtrack, and learning off by heart the lyrics to the lovesome lovelove song Haule Haule which has one of the loveliest, smiling-on-my-faceyest, heartwarmingest picturisations I've ever seen. No fancy effects, just gorgeous sweetitude.

I just love Shahrukh Khan's character of the nerdy humble office clerk who is overwhelmed by love entering his life unexpectedly. SRK also plays a laddish alter ego as is his wont but it's the office clerk who has completely won me over. I keep planning to make a long post about this film. For the moment, I'm just mindswooning.

The sekrit truth about Facebook wot I have worked out: it is for real life people.

For those of us who got used the the old internet - you know, the one where you don't go under your real name or post your entire address, phone number and work history for everyone to read, the one where you'd learn a complicated, jargony new language without realising it, or post wordy, considered and carefully-constructed essays about what you had for breakfast, rather than writing 'sheldrake is eating toast lol', and wouldn't dream of posting public photos of your friends and their families and other people you don't even know without asking their permission... it's all a bit odd.

I'm there because my local-type friends are there, and most of them now seem to use it as the primary mode of communication. Instead of sending an email or ringing up and saying 'hey, let's go and see a film', it's the done thing to create an Event on Facebook and invite everyone that way... and if you're not on Facebook or don't have everything sent to your email, well too bad.

Oh, and scary people from your past will seek you out and THEY WILL FIND YOU!

That was my rant about Facebook, which I obviously believe to be evil, but still somehow cannot leave. It is over now (the rant, not FB).

Exactly right. It is a place to have a public face, look up old friends or people you met at conferences. It's fine for that, convenient, but very different from fandom journals.

Could you ask if you can make the tea into lunch or supper?
