Something has died in our fridge. From the stench, it would appear to have been a fish of some sort. One opens the fridge door, and even after hastily closing it again, the stink wafts across the living room for another three minutes.

But where is this corpse hiding? I have cleared everything culprit-worthy out! Wizened slices of salami, cloudy-looking olives, past its sell-by date capers -- but none of these were fish-like! None of these smelled! And everything else is shrink-wrapped or a vegetable!

*despairs*

Have you checked the drainpan underneath the fridge?

Aha! Interesting idea!

Um, I'm not quite sure where this might be... The stench is definitely from the upper fridge bit not from the lower freezer bit.

The drain/drip pan is at the bottom of the fridge and usually slides out. I never knew it was there until I detected the horrible stench. Poke around a bit and see if you can find it.

I've looked around but can't find a drip pan! Our fridge is tall with the fridge compartment on top and the freezer at the bottom. Would the pan be inbetween fridge and freezer? We did find some frozen prawns that we threw out and that seems to have alleviated the situation a little. Gee, I didn't know frozen things could smell.

Gosh, I just said 'gee'.

Gee, I just said 'gosh'.

Something which you've cleared out could have leaked and is still stenchy. Try clearing everything out temporarily and cleaning the interior of the fridge, and then wipe it over with a bit of diluted vanilla essence.

Every single time I have found a horrid smell like what you describe in my kitchen, I kid you not, it has been A ROTTON POTATO! Check your potatoes. Seriously, when they go bad, they smell like a dead fish! And even one bad potato can spread it's bad smell to all the other ones.
