shopping euphoria

Today I spent a lot of money on a handbag.

For those who don't know me: I haven't worn a handbag for the last 1 1/2 years. In order to protect my back (which I did in four years ago) and because it does away with fiddliness and having to remember not to leave it behind somewhere, I have been wearing my urban utility belt.

I actually wear one bag on each hip.

But since I've started to look elegant, with the help of Missus Smartypants (a Flylady offshoot), I thought I needed something more stylish. So I've been walking through all the shops but I'm not used to the world of handbags and I didn't like anything.

Until today.

When I discovered . The Bridge medium shoulder bag. It was love at first sight!



And I had to have the cute coin purse to go with it!



The shop woman was amazing! She should win an award for Best Shop Assistant. I walked into that shop, just idly browsing, and I walked out in a state of high euphoria, having just been smoothtalked into spending an awful lot of money.



I got some 'leather food' to rub into the bag every three months, and I am to spray it with Scotchguard, and how exciting! I have a beautiful classic Italian handbag! The leather is a gorgeous tan called 'cognac'; it smells very nice; and I love the way the bag is both elegant and rustic and very sturdy and well-made, and the way you can hold it under your armpit or in the crook of your elbow or just hold it by the handles.

Now I am nervous about losing it or having it stolen or leaving it behind in a public loo! The thing about the utility belt is: it's not the world's most stylish solution but it is totally safe. You clip it on and never have to think about it for the rest of the day. I'm having to re-learn bag-craft and get into the slightly anxious mindset of the Bag Owner.

Also, am still in a state of high excitement about going to Stanford. It is possible that the Bag Buying extravaganza was a not-so-sublimated expression of this state of high excitement.

In these times of economic crunch one never knows whether it is foolish to spend money or one's duty as a capitalist citizen.

Thank you! Isn't it cute! I love it. It is stylish plus classic plus robust and rustic. And it smells! Of stable!

Now I'm having to get used to carrying it around. Today I got very confused and couldn't find where I had stashed anything. *g*
