vintage spectacles
Mar. 7th, 2009 07:58 pmIn these times of economic uncertainty, I bizarrely seem to be making endless posts about my consumer spending.
Today, I drove to St Alban's in Hertfordshire and bought myself a new pair of vintage 1980s eyeglasses with tiny oval lenses framed by copper-coloured metal, from a fabulous optician's shop called Robert Roope's or Retrospecs. They stock glasses from every decade, going back to the 1940s.
The spectacles that are in fashion right now do not suit my facial shape nor my mental attitude. For those of you who don't wear glasses or haven't bought a new frame for about ten years or so (which, until last August, included me), glasses look like this these days:

They are quite rectangularish, with an emphasis on the bit where the elbow/ear handle things join the frame; this bit tends to be designed in quite a blocky fashion that does not suit my face and that I don't like. Also, I'm not fond of the rectangular look; it is too severe for my face. Nor do I love the colours: I've realised that the 1980s and early 1990s were the glasses era for me: coppers, browns, frosted red metal, tortoiseshell...
This shop had such a cornucopia of 1980s divinities that I wanted to buy about four pairs!! Maybe I should just start collecting a few more glasses. I always have just one pair.
My new Brille:

It is being delivered to me within the next ten days! Not only will I look fabulous again but I will also be able to see again. For the first time in my life (I've worn glasses since age 7), I'll be using varifocals. How exciting! Although I hear that one needs to allocate about 2 weeks to get used to them. And as the lenses I chose are tiny, this may pose problems. But these glasses were me!

Date: 2009-03-07 08:24 pm (UTC)Also loved your handbag shopping post, though I never managed to comment on that one. The handles look a bit long for me (hey, I'm short and round everywhere!) but the colour is great and I'm sure the leather ages beautifully!

Date: 2009-03-07 08:28 pm (UTC)I have to admit those rectangular glasses do look good on some people but not on me. Also, I'm starting to think everyone looks the same. In England, at any rate, every person is now wearing that rectangular look!
I took my handbag out for a walk for the first time today. I got so confused finding anything; I clearly need to train myself up some more! Also, my clothes seemed so frumpy next to the HANDBAG. God, where is this leading me...?
