california dreaming upon an april day
Mar. 27th, 2009 12:09 amSo. We go to California next Saturday. It is official. We just received the itinerary.
We are there for two weeks, checking it all out, looking at schools, visiting real estate agents, hawking myself into a spouse deal, and then we will have to decide at some point whether we actually do want to go there on a permanent basis to live.
It's kind of an omg moment.
Of course, I firmly believe that all houses in America are like the Stahl House in my icon and that I will reside in gleaming steel and glass, overlooking the vast glittering expanses of modernity.
If nothing else, we will squeeze some fun holiday time out of it!! T'sons want to go to Alcatraz!

Date: 2009-03-27 04:21 am (UTC)Bring layers and expect it to be cool in the mornings and warm in the afternoons. Stanford could get up to the 80s or 90s F (28ish - 32ish C). Except Alcatraz, which tends to be cold and windy most days.
Palo Alto and surrounding areas are mostly non-gleaming and glittering, at least the houses. It's all full of nice old wood-frame detached houses or at least ranch-style ones with lots of trees and bushes. If you have to live in Fremont or Milpitas, they're full of identi-house developments and not much foliage :-(

Date: 2009-03-29 03:07 pm (UTC)Ranch-style houses, eh? All very interesting, almost unbearably so. Easter Sunday we will see a friend who lives in Berkeley so that should be taken care of but good to know that everything is closed. The UK has become so determinedly secular that this nation of shopkeepers rarely shuts down any shops. It's go-go-go pretty much 365/365.
It would be lovely to meet up! We haven't received our itinerary from Stanford yet so I don't know what time we have to fit in personal things. We need to look at houses, schools, see a handful of colleagues/friends, do presentations, tour the library (I know, I know, do I need a 'tour'? But am I going to say 'no' when they offer it and when a potential job is on the line?) and possibly 'dinners' and 'lunches'. It's all phenomenally daunting. I will try to keep in touch via internet!

Date: 2009-03-27 09:17 am (UTC)PS Alcatraz is totally cool; I recommend it.
PPS Americans are totally cool to live among (speaking from my experience on student exchange years ago). They are so extraverted, so you meet so many more people than you would in the more stick-up-the-bum parts of the world like ours.
