So. We go to California next Saturday. It is official. We just received the itinerary.

We are there for two weeks, checking it all out, looking at schools, visiting real estate agents, hawking myself into a spouse deal, and then we will have to decide at some point whether we actually do want to go there on a permanent basis to live.

It's kind of an omg moment.

Of course, I firmly believe that all houses in America are like the Stahl House in my icon and that I will reside in gleaming steel and glass, overlooking the vast glittering expanses of modernity.

If nothing else, we will squeeze some fun holiday time out of it!! T'sons want to go to Alcatraz!

Whee!! I hope you like it! Alcatraz is very cool...as is San Francisco in general. But be warned: some of our houses are MADE OF WOOD. I know, I know.

How do you mean, made of wood? Is that regarded as a shocking thing in the States?

Oh, you mean my ICON. *is slow* ;-)

Woot! I don't know if teenboy will be back, but kidlet and I could meet up with you for lunch and exploration one day. That's her spring break week so I'm not going to be working long hours. How long are you staying? Easter Sunday could get a bit tricky, as pretty much everything is closed.

Bring layers and expect it to be cool in the mornings and warm in the afternoons. Stanford could get up to the 80s or 90s F (28ish - 32ish C). Except Alcatraz, which tends to be cold and windy most days.

Palo Alto and surrounding areas are mostly non-gleaming and glittering, at least the houses. It's all full of nice old wood-frame detached houses or at least ranch-style ones with lots of trees and bushes. If you have to live in Fremont or Milpitas, they're full of identi-house developments and not much foliage :-(

Thank you! That is so kind! I feel churlish not jumping in and yelling 'yes' straightaway but as I said in my other comment, there are obligations. The uni is paying so we need to stay in tune with their schedule plus leave some free time to show t'sons t'area. Could I say that we'll try and stay in touch via internet (there should be internet cafes and suchlike on campus, surely?) but that if it doesn't work out, please don't take it the wrong way and if we decide to move there, more opportunities will arise??

32 degrees in April...??? *gulps* Oh, but thanks for the heads-up on the info for the other parts of the Bay Area; cool and windy island, I never would have expected this!

Ranch-style houses, eh? All very interesting, almost unbearably so. Easter Sunday we will see a friend who lives in Berkeley so that should be taken care of but good to know that everything is closed. The UK has become so determinedly secular that this nation of shopkeepers rarely shuts down any shops. It's go-go-go pretty much 365/365.

It would be lovely to meet up! We haven't received our itinerary from Stanford yet so I don't know what time we have to fit in personal things. We need to look at houses, schools, see a handful of colleagues/friends, do presentations, tour the library (I know, I know, do I need a 'tour'? But am I going to say 'no' when they offer it and when a potential job is on the line?) and possibly 'dinners' and 'lunches'. It's all phenomenally daunting. I will try to keep in touch via internet!

It is somewhat unbearably daunting so I'm trying to focus on just the 'holiday' aspect of it. Although I spent one day in t'reference library last week reading everything everybody there in my potential new department had published...

omg indeed!

PS Alcatraz is totally cool; I recommend it.

PPS Americans are totally cool to live among (speaking from my experience on student exchange years ago). They are so extraverted, so you meet so many more people than you would in the more stick-up-the-bum parts of the world like ours.

Okay, Alcatraz it definitely is, then! I'm not ordinarily fond of prisons but there we are. I was there for a year, in the States, and was a bit overwhelmed by the sheer number of Americans. But at that time I had not yet lived among t'poms, 'tis true...

P.S. How can you call Australia stick-up-the-bum? It is around 150 percent more outgoing than anybody on this sceptred and rained-on isle!!

Ah, well, then Americans are another 150% again! To the extent that it can be a bit confronting sometimes, when you're not used to it. :)

Thank you, dear Laz! It will lead to something, that much is for sure. Whether a chapter or just a table of contents, who is to know...?
