Dreamwidth is bloody frustrating.

I do not have an account but increasingly, LJ friends (or do I now need to call them LJ Former Friends, argh???) are cross-posting to LJ and disabling their comments. Or maybe it's just a default option that disables their LJ comments on DW, what do I know?

Anyway, it just took me minutes and minutes to try to comment to [livejournal.com profile] viva_gloria's latest DW-crossposted post; and the stupid thing kept telling me to go and get an Open ID (I've done that already!!) and to validate my email address (why???!!!) and to do this and to do that, and finally I was glibly fobbed off with the following message:

OpenID users aren't authorized to reply to this entry..

*stomps foot*

I love [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic and I trust all she does but this lemming-like Dreamwidthing of LJers is starting to get on my tits. I just want to comment and not chase emails and Open IDs and disabled comments and crossposts all around the virtual globe, and then have to scroll back to people's most recent comment-enabled post which will, as this progresses, recede further and further into the absurd past, in order to leave a Plea for Help!

So, Dreamwidthers, I appreciate that you're all happy with your new shiny red-coloured toy but could you please not disable LJ comments so that those of us who still want to be your friends (but live in late-adopter luddite lala land) can continue to comment without ruining their patience?

Thank you.

P.S. My life is otherwise problematic at the moment so this is a steam-letting-off rant.

My LJ name isn't accepted because it has an underscore, I think, but nor are my other Open IDs that work on all other blogs. I've asked around for the last week and am just leaving it now, since everyone else suddenly already seems to have an account and no problem and find the Open ID there most userfriendly and view me as some dissenter.

Let me annoy you with some advice I got: clear your cache?

It's your custom style, btw, not your underscore. Your journal needs to have something in the header that says "yo! openid here!" and yours doesn't.

To follow up on what [livejournal.com profile] abbylee said, you might want to take a look at this FAQ: Why do I receive an error message when using my LiveJournal URL as my OpenID identity? (http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=233)

O gads, this all seems so much trouble. Perhaps those freinds as wot are deserting me here will just have to live without me, ack.

Thank you; I did that and it still wouldn't accept my LJ ID.

I don't see that information in your journal anywhere; you may want to check again :)

How do you mean you're leaving it now? Leaving what?

Cache? What cache? Ack.

Leaving it be :)

Cache of automatically saved pages as you serve (usually hand-deletable under settings->private data).

Even after deleting about 100 of them, he's still in the remaining 30 or so.

Over a horrible week, in batches of 10-30 (and now I miss all those I thought I wouldn't miss and don't use the remainers haha).

Ah, yes, it's so frustrating. And I have a DW account, but I'm still going to get annoyed at those who crosspost disabling comments. Also, it might not be you at all since you can set your DW account to allow comments only from registered users (yeah, that's an option), so for all you know, she's got her account set up that way which would (maybe? not even sure) explain some of your difficulty with this. At any rate, even without open ID, unless she's set it up differently, you should still be able to comment without logging in on a public post. Weird.

It doesn't solve the problems, but would at least fix *your* frustration. Do you want an invite to make an account?

Well, that would be giving in, wouldn't it? *g* Also, I hear that very soon everyone can get an account without an invite so I don't quite see what the hurry is...??

Dreamwidth will always use invites, both to control spam/bot accounts and to control their growth. They plan to make invites reasonably available, but you will definitely need one (or to buy at least a month of paid time) in order to register a new account.

Yes, that's what I thought: if you pay, you don't need an invite. Isn't that so?? If I do decide to get a DW account, I'll certainly pay.

I heard of this and thought of you:

http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/geocities/geocities-05.html

Do you still have your stories archived there? If you want a new place to stay, I'd be happy to host you on my webspace.

No problem! There are so many websites from the beginnings of the Internet on Geocities, it seems. It would suck if they all just vanished in a puff of smoke because the maintainers were caught unawares.
