I haven't read any fanfic for at least one year.

Can you recommend something, o wise flist, to get me back into the swing of things? Something that's not too long, not too cracky (because I won't "get" the crack, having been out of it for so long) but can be any fandom, including strange new ones.

Can be a bit older, too. Chances are that if it's been written since April 2008, I won't have read it.

Thank you!!

Have you come across Primeval yet? It's taken off bigtime. Lots of testosterone and dinosaurs.... I belong to [livejournal.com profile] primeval_denial but I'm sure there are others.

My own fandoms are tiny otherwise, and I keep doing crossovers that only appeal to me. Tcha. (You'll find them in the usual place under my Memories).

What would you like? Slash, het, gen, adventure, romance, humor?

Slash. And anything but not humour. Especially something deep and repressed and full of manly taciturn love and adventure can be part of it, please. Don't tell me you know something???

Oh wow!! Thank you! Katabasis -- what a great title.

I read a 1979 Kirk/Spock last night. It was, to quote Spock, 'fascinating'.

I thought I had read and enjoyed the odd fic, but apparently nothing I actually saved or remembered. Well, when in doubt, there's always the old reliables. (SGA, Speranza).

And I thought this Due South fic was lovely, although I can't remember enough to know if it will work without knowing canon.

I also read classic Kirk/Spock from 1979, which was very interesting!

Thank you! I trust all you say and will print out forthwith.

Am currently reading a published book by an author whose fanfic I adored. While hugely impressed by the publishedness, I am underwhelmed by the actual book. This sometimes happens. :-(

OK, I am pleased to see that this Speranza story is not one I had read and scared to see that it got something like 15 pages worth of comments....!!!! What to say?

Wow. Have decided to print out the Kirk/Spock one first. The best thing about this new Star Trek thingy is that these old fics are being rediscovered and a whole new generation is finding the roots of slashy love. The original Star Trek was before our time, of course, but I find it really exciting to know that people are collating these yellowing historical documents and making them available in weird txt formats. Wow!!!

I know, it's all rather fun! :) I do like how it's sort of come full circle. I'd love to know what you think of this one, it made me think a lot about slash itself and its appeal, and how conventions change over time.

I've just finished printing it out. It's long! I am extremely intrigued by the whole idea of how conventions change. I once read one of the very early Kirk/Spock fics, somebody recced it somewhere years ago, and it was really, really weird. I'm wondering if fics have even changed since we first entered lotrips. I'll let you know my thoughts when I've finished reading this!!

Hmm, fascinating. *does Spock face* I look forward to your observations, Captain.

And now I'm going to bed. Nighty night!

*raises eyebrow*

It was fascinating! Totally! I am pondering an entry on it. Whom does one even feedback? I had dizzy-making historical vertigo when I was reading it. It seems like a document from another era. Yet I was alive!!

I have a bunch of recs on Delicious, and they're not just lotrips any more. Merlin (mostly AUs), SGA, Torchwood, even bandom. I'm trying hard to keep an open mind.

Hrmmm.

Supernatural, incest: http://rivkat.livejournal.com/218490.html All you need to know is they are manly, repressed brothers who drive around America fighting ghosts and ghouls, and living essentially indigently in motel rooms.

Various short Hornblower smut by a great writer:

I am loving all of this! The fandoms are as Timbuctoo to me but manly and repressed is like a thousand Treebeard pollens to mine grateful sensibilities.

P.S. Ignore the grammar in all of the above. I am desperate now to sample the manreps. Also: manrepbros who live in motesl and fight ghouls????? Who comes up with this stuff???
