I had a really nice time with [livejournal.com profile] sheldrake today who now lives near a new harbour re-development and has about five cafés/restaurants within five minutes' walking distance of her house. The visit really made me think about writing again; it was so stimulating to talk about all that again!

Also, on the way there and back I tested our new CD-player in our brand new car (VW Golf; bought using t'government's scrappage deal, yay). I miss not being able to play my old compilation tapes (no cassette player in this new model...) and not being able to play my ipod (we were too miserly to spend thousands more on an ipod jack) but there's a silver lining to everything because I have finally found the best venue for listening my way through all of [livejournal.com profile] kathputli_girl's generously gifted Sukhwinder Singh CDs!

It was great! :) I nearly sat down and wrote something after you'd gone. Not quite though. Maybe the cafes really are the answer...

Tell you what I did: this morning, I sat down and typed up 3 pages worth of scribbled notes that I still had hanging around for my HP opus. I thought maybe if I just move my fingers, and even if it's not orig. So! That is something!! And it made my brain a bit stupid because all I needed to do was type, not compose or create or think, but even so I found myself making little revisions. I thought, I'll just oil these fingers.

:-) I love that cafe with that view!

That's really great! I think editing or revising can be a great way to get back into the writing groove. I must admit to haveing done none in the last week, but work's been busy and annoying, so I'm telling myself that's an excuse. ;)

Oh, you know how we were talking about RPF in mainstream fiction? You know that book of short stories edited by Zadie Smith you were looking at and said you might buy? There is some rather interesting RPF in it! I won't tell you which one though, you have to discover it for yourself. :)

Funny you should mention ipod jacks; I was at the Apple store in town today to check how much they cost. Basically, the price is around forty quid.

But you need a stereo line-in port and I don't have anything to stick the ipod jack into in the car. :-( That is what the extra 2,500 would have bought me.

Not all of the songs are of equal quality, I find, but I think you mentioned that already. Sometimes SS just has to lend his voice to minor composers, it seems. Also, his particular type of voice, I find, is not suited to all types of song equally. But when the music suits his voice, he can pull subtleties out of a tune that nobody else can. He has a very mellifluos but also a bit blunt and almost hoarse voice, and it's very flexible.

what is an ipod jack? if your stereo has a line-in port you can just use a standard 3.5mm mini-jack to mini-jack. costs pennies.

b.x :)

The stereo has no line-in port; that is what I meant by ipod jack. We would have had to pay 2,500 pounds more for a car that had this port; it had a better engine and other nifties as well but we wanted to save the money for something else.
