O my God. O my God! O MY GOD!!!! xlfjkjhjshjkl;iwo%&%()(

There is a Dudley fest. With a Dudley prompt. My love knows no bounds.

Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] vasiliki for the alert and the poking and prompting!

Hee, you're welcome! :D Are you going to claim one of the prompts? Or submit your own prompt and finish your Dudley/Draco WIP? (I hope the latter, for the world can never have enough of Draco goodness!)

I read the instructions very carefully (and discovered that there is a certain insiderishness going on in that comm which puts me off a tiny bit but this is possibly inevitable in the small world of Dudley love -- but also I thought the Dudley love wasn't quite as big as I'd hoped as it's very specifically a redeemed Dudley love, and to me that is more of an 'interest' and not a 'love' because a love is unconditional and adores Dudley no matter what, redeemed or unredeemed or anything in between, and who's to say that he needs redeeming, anyway, and that the magical world is so fucking fantastic that all must worship it, including Dudley?) and it turns out that you can post an 'own prompt' but not until the 'claiming period' which starts on 1 June. So I have a bit of a grace period to mull this over in terms of a) time needing to be devoted, and b) possible lack of required 'redemption' and Dudley-centrism (my fic has a lot of Harry/Draco as well, and a lot of Draco who's the pov character, and it's more about redeeming Draco than Dudley; in my fic, Dudley doesn't need redeeming; it's the magical world that's fucked; Harry gets redeemed as well).

Phew. *draws breath*

But thank you, thank you for the prompting and the supporting! Keep this up and I may actually revisit the damn thing. It only fills one entire A4 ring binder and a magazine file full of notes and note cards...

Okay, I just did a word count of the fic draft as it stands and omg, it's 78,000 words. *headdesks*

My goodness, this is even more interesting than I thought - it's about redeeming Draco and it has H/D!
But... it starts with H/D and ends up with D/D? Oh no, the H/D fangirl in me weeps! But if Draco tops too, instead of only bottoming, I may buy it! ;)

As for the Fest, they say somewhere they just mean the "redeeming" in terms of Dudley been presented better than what he was at GoF.
JKR already set up the basis for that by presenting Dudley under a different light during his final parting from Harry - he seemed to have grown as a person. Also, in an interview she said that the relationship between adult!Harry and Dudley is on the level of exchanging Xmas cards.

who's to say that he needs redeeming, anyway, and that the magical world is so fucking fantastic that all must worship it, including Dudley?

It's interesting you say this. I agree with the part about the magical world, but I disagree with the "unconditional love" you mentioned before: Dudley was presented as a horrible bully in the earlier books - for someone to LOVE unconditionally that Dudley, they should be Petunia or Vernon! If he had remained that way, then he wouldn't have grown as a person, but he'd have stagnated. But hopefully, people don't remain immature 13-year olds till the end of their lives! I think that's the spirit of the Fest: to explore Dudley's potential beyond the canon of the earlier books.

In any case, it's a crime to deprive the reading world of 78000+ words of Draco POV!!! :D Who cares about the Fest? You have to revisit the fic, because the world needs to read more Draco!

Why am I still awake? Ack.

But I could not resist reading yours and replying -- oh timezones, ye are cruel mistresses.

I am very intrigued in your position on Draco topping or bottoming. Tell more!! And does this top/bottom bias of yours pertain to Draco as such or just to Draco/Harry? I've not read beyond Goblet so that's where my canon stops, alas, except for the movies and they don't count as canon. Not for me, anyway. My main canon knowledge all derives from fanon, anyway: always the best source!

Yes, of course, one could not love the horrible bully of the early books but, as you said: this is Harry pov! Who's to say that Dudley really was a horrible bully? Who's not to know the hidden trauma that made him like this? And Petunia: I am very interested in Petunia who plays a role in my fic.

Who cares about the Fest? You have to revisit the fic, because the world needs to read more Draco!
Let me officially hoist you on a plinth. You are so kind! Nobody has encouraged my madness since [livejournal.com profile] ukcalico in 2004, and she is now so rarely on LJ that it's like a sighting of the yeti.

oh timezones

I stayed up for the same reason! It was 2am for you and 4am for me! (I'm only 2 hours ahead of the UK, but it feels more at 4 am in the morning!)

And does this top/bottom bias of yours pertain to Draco as such or just to Draco/Harry?

1) It pertains to all male/male pairings I enjoy reading. It all has to do with equality in the couple and the partners being able to switch. This is also one reason the overuse of anal sex in fics bores me - there is a variety of sexual practices that could be used.
If I wanted to read sex where one ALWAYS penetrates and the other is ALWAYS penetrated, I'd read het! It doesn't have to do with "big manly" types (in fact, I prefer average size men, like Harry and Draco are: "Seekers", not "Beaters"), it has to do with being a "man" who needs to penetrate and not a "woman" who is always penetrated.
2) I prefer slash to yaoi (except if the yaoi is of the rare "Haru wo Daite Itta" -Embracing Spring- type), because it's nearer to the versatile homosexual dynamic in RL, while yaoi has these set "seme" (top) and "uke" (bottom) roles. Of course, some homosexuals in RL do fit the top and bottom roles, but it's rare. (personally, I know of extremely few exclusive bottoms in RL, and they all happen to be effeminate)
3) My problem with many bottom!Draco fics is that they effeminate him, make him cry, be weak, dependent on Harry, etc. My problem with top!Draco fics is that they make him into something he's not. Which is why I vastly prefer the versatile H/D fics.
4) I'll read any fic with good Draco characterization, no matter what position he takes in bed - besides, there are fics with a lower rating, where what he does in bed isn't shown! :D But as I said above, bottom!Draco fics and good characterization don't go hand in hand often. (I've only found 2-3 authors who manage it)

as you said: this is Harry pov! Who's to say that Dudley really was a horrible bully?

Absence of descriptions of appearance by Harry is one thing, but Dudley appeared as a bully in the early books because of his actions - he was certainly not born like that, he was a product of his environment. Harry was also a bully towards the Slytherins sometimes, despite the fact he never thought of himself that way! (personally, acts of cruelty turn me off big time! I always found it horrible that when the fake Moody transformed Draco into a ferret and hit him around, the "good guys" laughed! O_O)

Canon has changed a LOT the characters after GoF (esp, the last 2 books - they destroyed my balanced H/D dynamic *wails*) and fanon doesn't do them justice. This is a fic wherein you can read the last book (if you don't want to read the entire book, I can tell you which few chapters show Draco or Dudley):

Thanks for pointed this out to me. It looks very interesting, but I notice the prompts are very fic-centric. Any chance of some delicious art-centered prompts appearing? =)

Also, when are we going to see this D/D fic you're doing? We love WIPs! 75k words so far? And you're not sharing yet? *drools in anticipation*

Ohh, I just discovered your website: how lovely your art is! *_* I wish you would draw more of Draco!!!

Is the woman in "the Malfoy" pic Narcissa or Draco under a spell?

Btw, the link to the "Flying Ointment" pic is broken. And the links to the challenge "Picture the Story" take too long to load - maybe the server is down.

Thank you! Have you read my Dudley fic? http://didodikali.livejournal.com/2382.html

Thank you for the notes on link failure, too. I need to go tweak that some time very soon...

I admit I only read fully the last chapter. I'm not a Dudley fan, but a Draco fan, who unfortunately was only a ferret in the story. (but him bitting Voldemort's butt was nifty! :D)
I did enjoy Dudley's and Harry's dialogue in the last chapter, though! And the ficlet about Draco's potion incident and his secret desire for Harry! ;D (Harry/Draco fangirl here!)

Oh, don't get me wrong: I adore Draco/Harry myself. After all, it was [livejournal.com profile] resonant8's Transfigurations with its out-of-this-world Harry/Draco that lured me into HP (kicking and screaming but succumbing humbly and utterly in the end) in the first place...!

And the fic I am writing started out as Harry/Draco! And then kind of veered... It has a very big H/D component. Actually, what am I saying? That fic started out as Karl/Dom... ack.

*screeches* I NEED to read the fic! ;_;

OK, if you don't take part in the Fest, then you could start posting it in small installments... say, 7000 words at a time? People's replies will motivate you to continue it!

Okay, that is a thought. That is definitely a very good thought. Thank you for that very intriguing thought!

Yes, maybe Dudley fest is too specialised and will put pressure as inevitably happens when you're posting in a comm rather than on home turf (oh the days of yahoogroups) so I like this. First, ahem, though, I must finish it. People do not like unfinished WIPs.

I could post in installments of 65,535 characters, to be precise. As this is the limit of one LJ post. (Phew, I just calculated that to equate to around 11,350 words so that's plenty.) Hm, this may also help me structure the thing into chapters and so give it the rhythm it currently lacks.

You have no idea what a balm and what a spur your *screeching* is! In fact, I've been thinking about this fic all day now!!!

Het, slash, with inanimate objects -- I'll take my Dudley as I find him. Thanks!

There's a Dudley in every fandom. In lotr, it was the orcs. In SGA, it's the wraith. (For me, anyway. They occupy similar spaces in my head.)
