spring spree
May. 22nd, 2010 09:15 pmFinally! The sun is hot! I sat in the garden! I got a tan line! I did my marking in an outdoor café and made myself fry. Then I bought three summery items of clothing:
Gladiator sandals! (From The Office.)
An A-line denim skirt from The Gap! (can't locate a pic)
City shorts! From M&S.
I'm still looking for a nice black summer dress. I tried one on in Oxfam the other day but it had weird shoulders; otherwise nice and flowy. And only 5 pounds.

Date: 2010-05-22 11:20 pm (UTC)I am circling my way back to H/D/D; I just printed out a Harry/Draco fic by someone called

Date: 2010-05-22 11:55 pm (UTC):D
You're making me happy!
As for the fic by that author you've printed, I don't know if it was good or not, but the following fics by Duinn Fionn are excellent:
http://archive.skyehawke.com/authors.php?no=157 (the first one is HILARIOUS!!! And "Mother of Pearl" is... is... *sniffle*)
And this one, where Harry is a clock-maker and doesn't know his new clerk is Draco in disguise:
http://community.livejournal.com/hd_holidays/160954.html (Chasing Time by Taradiane)
And also this one, with a lot of magic:
http://community.livejournal.com/hd_holidays/160706.html (Draco Malfoy, It's Your Lucky Day by Faithwood)
And many more recs, if you just tell me what your reading preferences are! (humor? angst? are Harry and Draco schoolboys or adults? excellent prose or simpler language? etc)

Date: 2010-05-23 01:13 pm (UTC)Right now, I'm reading for research so anything that reminds me of the kinds of spells they use, all the classmates' names, and that gets me up to speed on Blood half Prince or whatever it's called, Deathly Hallows and I can't even remember the other one I didn't read -- anything after Order of Phoenix, basically, because it was about then that I dropped with canon tedium.
Wot i love apart from teh resurge: anything when they're grown up, i.e. early 20s, post-Voldemort-defeat. That's what drew me to HP to begin with: the potential for endless angst; the damaged people; the possibility of turning JKR's black-and-white universe inside-out to show the good and the bad in everybody.
Style-wise: Resonant. Fabula Rasa. Mistful/Maya. Calico. Julad. Oh, and of course, Helenish. Either terse and dialogue-driven, or baroque and full of imagery. I don't like Snape/Harry or Neville or anything with the Marauders or het, and having said all that, I have to add that some of my favourite fics in HP fandom have included any and all of these. Which is why it's such a phenomenal fandom. Because there's a niche for everybody. And I can be convinced by a phenomenal Snape/Harry, or a Snape/Neville, omg, Julad. Oh, and I forgot Thamiris who died.
black-and-white universe
Date: 2010-05-23 06:32 pm (UTC)She kind of did it on her own in the last 2 books (6th book: HBP - Half-Blood Prince, and 7th book: DH - Deathly Hallows), even though the reader didn't always know what was going on due to the limited POV! In HBP, Draco is given by Voldemort the order to kill Dumbledore, otherwise Voldemort will kill Draco and his family. Of course, Voldemort doesn't believe Draco will succeed to kill such a powerful wizard, he just wants to punish Lucius Malfoy offing his son. Draco isn't a Prefect anymore, he drops Quidditch, and tries to use poisoned and cursed items to kill Dumbledore. One day, he breaks down and cries in Myrtle's (the ghost's) bathroom, when Harry (who followed him because he's suspicious of him - and that's written in canon: "He was rapidly becoming obsessed with Draco Malfoy") enters and hits him with a deadly (yet he didn't know it was deadly) spell in defense, as Draco attempts to "Crucio" him. Snape saves Draco from bleeding to death, yet JKR doesn't have Harry the Good Guy visiting Malfoy in the hospital wing, neither is he punished for almost killing a classmate!
How's that for a black-and-white universe?
In Harry's defense, at the beginning of the school year, Malfoy had Petrified him and broken his nose (as pay back for Lucius Malfoy getting arrested and imprisoned in Azkaban).
At the end of the book, Draco tries to kill Dumbledore face to face: he disarms him, but he can't bring himself to kill him. Snape does it, instead (following Dumbledore's orders - but the reader only learns this at the end of the 7th book). Harry is hidden and witnesses everything.

Date: 2010-05-24 09:57 pm (UTC)Fandom knows, of course, that Harry has been obsessed with Draco from the word go, so duh, hello, JKR, you're finally cottoning in by your sixth book... *g*
Re: black-and-white universe
Date: 2010-05-24 10:46 pm (UTC)*evil laugh* >:D I'm happily taking the blame!
I almost died of boredom reading HBP, back in 2005 - so many pages to say so few things! *yawns* It was redeemed only by the few chapters that mentioned Draco.
But Deathly Hallows was a decent read!
I have seen the movie and drooled uncontrollably over Tom Felton and the bathroom scene, omg.
Me too! <3 *joins in drooling*
I found the rest of the movie as boring as the book, though!
Re: black-and-white universe
Date: 2010-05-25 08:41 pm (UTC)Goodness me, why did they take the editor away from JKR? You are totally right: my eyes glaze over as it goes on and on; in every five paragraphs there is one little nugget. Argh. But I'm actually enjoying it more than I had expected to. But I had expected to enjoy it at minus ten on a scale of 1-3 so...
HBP movie
Date: 2010-05-26 08:38 am (UTC)That's exactly what I'm talking about! ;D Only Draco redeemed HBP! (book and movie!)
black-and-white universe, part 2
Date: 2010-05-23 07:10 pm (UTC)http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5052710/3/Reading_the_Deathly_Hallows (I know you don't want to read canon, but I'm giving the link just in case...)
In ch. 23, Harry, Ron, and Hermione are captives in Malfoy Manor - Harry's face is bloated out of recognition because of a Stinging Jinx, but they guess it's him because of who he's traveling with and his forehead. They ask from Draco to identify him - but he avoids looking at him, says he doesn't know, and he walks away!!!
In the second half of ch. 31, Harry & Co. return to Hogwarts and are attacked by Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle in the Room or Hidden Things, which is an aspect of the Room of Requirement. Malfoy tries to stop Crabbe & Goyle from killing Harry (he says the Dark Lord wants Potter alive), but Crabbe unleashes Fiendfyre that burns everything - Crabbe dies, Harry & Co. escape on brooms, and Harry saves Draco! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
And he saw them: Malfoy with his arms around the unconscious Goyle, the pair of them perched on a fragile tower of charred desks, and Harry dived. Malfoy saw him coming and raised one arm, but even as Harry grasped it he knew at once that it was no good. Goyle was too heavy and Malfoy's hand, covered in sweat, slid instantly out of Harry's –
"IF WE DIE FOR THEM, I'LL KILL YOU, HARRY!" roared Ron's voice, and, as a great flaming chimaera bore down upon them, he and Hermione dragged Goyle onto their broom and rose, rolling and pitching, into the air once more as Malfoy clambered up behind Harry.
"The door, get to the door, the door!" screamed Malfoy in Harry's ear,
