real life has taken me over
Jul. 24th, 2010 01:52 pmThursday 9-6: Spent in open plan office of the university timetablers. Went through every single module with toothcomb. Fascinating problems that needed to be ironed out:
• Module X has 6 hours. Part-time lecturer A is teaching it. His staff constraints are Mon 12-2, Tues 12-2, Wed 12-2. That is: 6 hours. His teaching does not fit into this availability. Ergo: must contact part-time lecturer and ask him to extend availability.
• Part-time lecturer B is teaching 18 hours in semester 2. This amounts to 224 hours in total. He is teaching 179 hours more than he is legally permitted to teach as a part-timer. Ergo: emails to B. Emails to Head of Department. Emails to colleagues: who else can teach this? Upshot: not timetabled.
• Module on video needs an 8-hour solid block in week 12 in specialised room. Specialised room is not available for a solid block as it's booked by our other modules (*headdesk*). Software won't allow 8-hour solid blocks as students are not allowed to be taught for 8 hours straight without a break. Ergo: must over-ride software. Email lecturer. Get reply: move the whole thing to week 13 when the semester is over. Timetabling software won't allow week 13 as students are deemed to be on vacation and lecturers deemed to be 'not available'. *headdesk several desks in open plan*
And so it goes on. Then colleagues keep emailing: Can I have the Wed morning slot, please? I can only teach on Tuesdays. I don't want to teach on two consecutive days. I don't like to teach in this particular room.
WHO CARES?! Argh. NO, YOU CANNOT BE ACCOMMODATED.
Also: Istanbul. We leave next week. Yesterday, I was in Brick Lane and bought myself at Spitalfields Market a long black jersey-knit T-shirt dress. I don't wear such items but I thought, omg, must cover the legs in Muslim Ramadan city! The dress is kind of slinky which might neutralise the desired effect of leg modesty.
Still to get:
• summer trousers that are not shorts for t'boys
• head mosquito nets for t'h
• micro-towels (as no towels provided in apartment)
• novels to read
• travel clothesline made of braided latex and without suction cups (not avail. in UK, argh)
• comfortable walking shoes that are not winter lace-ups (argh)
• foldable travel hairdryer
• universal sink stopper
