For a while it was HP, and SGA was pretty explosive, and in its way, bandom and lotrips did things other fandoms hadn't done before, and Star Trek of course is the original happenin' place, and everyone surely has read at least one Due South fic in their lives...

But what is the Happening Fandom right now?

ETA: And I guess I mean 'Happening' as opposed to 'an obscure fandom wot i love without rhyme nor reason' (e.g. David Mitchell and other curmudgeonly blokes off the telly) or 'a fandom that once was great and I cling to it with all my heart'. This doesn't necessarily need to be Your Fandom, just a Happening fandom.

Is there one?

Maybe there isn't one?!

Merlin's the biggest current one I know about, though it's gone through the OMG SQUEE EVERY DAY! phase, and the fic is getting repetitive :-/

Doctor Who Eleven has some people moving. I don't much like him, nor the last season of Ten.

Sherlock Holmes is pretty active, overlap between the books, the RDJ movie, and the brand-new UK TV series.

Memes and Big Bangs in Star Trek, SGA, and Supernatural.

Half the Bandom guys got married (to women!) and many of those have babies. Some good residual fic but not a huge amount on my flist these days...

that's off the top of my head, hope it sets the scene

Wow, you covered everything!

HP may become more active when the movie comes out - it remains active, actually, but it's very fragmented.

Well, Lobelia, if you want to get in a new TV series (not just fandom), then I recommend Supernatural - the first 3 seasons are for warm up, but then it'll earn you forever! ;D

Drat it all, I thought there might be something hidden out there that I know nothing about but I seem to have my finger on the pulse more than I thought... hah!

I've even written Merlin! And read some Doctor Who but no Eleven. And read some Sherlock! And made a Sherlock icon! And I've written Star Trek rps although I have not seen the film. And I'm not sure SGA is still Happening because that was a Big Time Fandom for me and now traffic has dwindled. Supernatural I know exists but know nothing of; may have read a fic once; did do nothing for me.

Bandom guys got worried! Whatever next?

Thanks for the list!!!!!

Yup, I agree on Merlin (though it seems to be waning again) and Sherlock Holmes (though that one has gone on forever, and with all due respect, the better fiction has been written years ago and before the movie).

A quick look at ff.net's just-in page shows Twilight and Harry Potter both with multiple stories. HP, of course, is old news, but Twilight has been largely ignored by my part of fandom.

Dr. Who has been generating some attention; I see a lot about Glee on my f-list...

I feel like Supernatural is still THE FANDOM of the moment. Even though I'm not involved in it. From the outside looking in, that seems to be the case.

Though, I am surprised at how popular the Luke/Reid fandom has become in a very short time in fandom. ATWT, fwiw. I am involved in that one and am surprised by the number of familiar faces.

Oh, but now there is also Adam Lambert fandom in all of its permutations. It seems like everyone is involved in that one, too. But me. Very hot at the moment.

It is true that there are many odd and obscure posts on my flists wot i scroll past quickly and I always interpret them as Supernatural. Although they may be something else. How would I know... *g*

Luke/Reid? What is that???

Oh yes, I've come across Adam Lambert! But that seems very Americentric to me; isn't it the US version of Britain's got talent? I don't like that plump chappie with the eyeshadow. I like me the manly men; if they're already camp irl, they are not slashy to me. :-)

I am not fond of the plump chappie, either. LOL! I mean, he's a fine person, I'm sure, but I'm not thinking he's hot. And, no, it is no longer just an American thing. He has become an international thing from what I've seen of my flist.

Luke/Reid is As The World Turns, an American Soap, and it goes off the air forever in September. There was Luke & Noah, but they had no chemistry and sucked, so awhile ago the powers that be introduced Reid, a cranky yet hot neurosurgeon, who happened to be Noah's doctor, and he and Luke had a hate relationship until it fell into a hot-for-each-other thing and then started to be about a lot more than that. Reid is a jerk, and I think one of my favorite scenes is when Luke's mother confronts him about what's going on with Reid, and she's like, "He doesn't seem like he's a very nice man." And Luke looks utterly gooey with love/lust as he says, "Who, Reid? He's not. He's rude...and cold...and rude." But he's like so...in love over it. It's hilarious and adorable.

If you're interested, here's a teaser clip:

If you don't want to watch the whole thing, watch it starting at around 5:09. It gets pretty intense then.

And if you want to watch from the beginning here's a good place to start:

ETA: Also, they do kiss, but I think those are better (and they are really hot) when you've gotten invested in the outcome.

Oh, this is a soap fandom! This is ATWT! I know about soap fandoms! I had a very intense time in Verbotene Liebe (were you around then?), and then spilled over into some other German soaps, even watched a bit of a Spanish one. I read lots of discussions comparing the German to the American soaps, and the upshot seemed to be that the American ones were pruder while the German ones had kissing and nudity and full-on everything so I sort of never watched the American ones because the German ones seemed racier and cornier and just Germanier, *gg*.

But yay! Gay soaps!

And for the most beautiful episode in soapdom ever, here's 4 April 2008, Verbotene Liebe, Olli/Christian. It starts out intense and just gets better. It ends in total guh. (You may know it!)

But I was very, very, very into SGA but traffic seems to have dwindled so I didn't think it was Happening. More like Was Happening.

It would be interesting to know wouldn't it? I'm not sure how objective it is possible to be with it, since one is generally attracted to the fandoms one is already interested in. Plus, I don't have a basis to judge on size. I keep up to date on the Merlin fandom pretty heavily, and it seems fairly popular, but is that considered big compared to others? I have no idea. Plus, I'm disconnected in the real world from the BBC fandoms here in America. I made a TARDIS camera case and no one knows what it is.

Date: 2010-08-01 01:01 pm (UTC)

Yes, how can one be objective...? *sighs* And it's true, sheer numbers are not necessarily an indication of Happening-ness. Although I think amount of traffic is. And scale of squee. Nobody knows your Tardis camera case!! Now that is tragic.

Well, Sherlock Holmes is an old fandom with a rich body of fanworks, but as several people noted upthread, the 2009 movie and recent BBC show have brought in flocks of new people. It's definitely a happening fandom right now (and really, it's always been an active one, even before the 2009 movie).

Merlin is very popular with some people on my flist who were formerly active in SGA, and some former HP fen, too. Merlin/Arthur seems to map on to Harry/Draco for H/D shippers on my flist, in some way that makes intuitive sense, but which I'd be hard-pressed to defend.

I knew about Holmes! See detective icon! I suppose I'm taken by surprise by the seeming Happening-ness of it, judging from people's comments here. Just goes to show (not sure what it goes to show but it definitely shows something).

And I even wrote Merlin! I think. And I wonder why it's populated by former SGA fans (of whom I am one). H/D and Merlin/Arthur: this is interesting!!! I am pondering it!
