For all of my lovely flist sibs who know not what is this Inception fandom thing. Or even: fandom what fandom?

I had been out of any fandom for a little while when this one grabbed me. Here are four more things I noticed that happened while I wasn't looking: new jargon, new acronyms, new typety-types. (Well, new to me!)

• bb. I'm pretty sure this stands for 'baby'... It is very prevalent! Fellow fen call each other 'bb', and they call the boys 'bb', especially when they are flailing over pics of the boys when younger.

• Flail. Now, there was a lot of flailing in lotrips fandom in 2002, and then the flail sort of went away, from my neck of the woods, anyway. So I'm very glad that 2010/11 marks a Return of the Flail!

• idek. I've already mentioned this one; it stands for 'I don't even know'. There are a whole lot of 'I don't evens...' and, as a wise person pointed out in my comments (I can't remember who it was! and can't go scrolling back to check due to laptop limitations, don't ask), there is rather a lot of incoherence: as in, people have to stop sentences 1/2 way through as they descend into flailing inchoateness. Three 'I don't evens...' slipped their way into my latest comment on someone's post so this is catching! (as in: "I don't even." "I can't even.")

• *________________* Long stretchy emoticons. I am interpreting this as a stretched smiley face (but I could be wrong?) and as the equivalent of idek.

What you've always wanted to know is new in Inception compared to previous fandoms and never could be bothered finding out unless you're in the fandom yourself
Well, what is new to me, anyway.

Steps in fandom
Lotrips had fic. And more fic. And teenie slasher fic! (Whatever happened to the teenie slasher? Are they all growed up now, o noes.) And pics! Lots and lots and lots of pics. And tinhats.

My next fandom (not counting Wainthropp), Harry Potter, had looooong fics. That was new to me. Fics that were novels! And fps geekery. Lots of it.

My fandom after that, Stargate Atlantis, had vids! I had not encountered vids before, and I loved vids! (Now, of course, my laptop is too old and decrepit to be able to show me vids properly...) I bought several CDs because of music I encountered via vid!

Then came football fandom and a return to the crazy days of rps. *clutches heart* Nothing was really new here, except the fact that the fandom was so VAST and spanned, liek, the entire globe almost and had lots of men in it and every taxi driver and barber and academic colleague participated.

Inception fandom has very nice art! I am enjoying the fanart! I knew fanart from HP but I'm particularly enjoying this fanart. Also: the return of the WIP! I feel the WIP sort of went out of fashion with the move from yahoo groups to LiveJournal and wasn't much liked but now it's back in the form of comment fic, especially comment fic in kink_meme comms! And comment fic! That's a newbie! Well, there's always been little itty bitty cracky comment fic but in Inception it's been transmuted into an epic art form! And people hang out for the appearance of the next installment in the WIP comment fic!

All of this is interesting to me.

Another thing I've learned is that my handwriting has fallen down the toilet since my lotrips days in 2002. I wrote an entire notebook full of fic last week but do you think I can even understand one single sentence? I'm giving up. It's too frustrating squinting at illegible scrawl. I must develop new writing habits (Alpha Smart Neo? shlepping laptop everywhere? Letraset?).

ETA: Experimental writing. Lord of the Rings rps was full of writing experiments. HP more novelly, football totally straight (as it were!!), SGA quite experimenty again -- or was it just that for me SGA was the writing experiment playground? Inception fandom fairly standard again, full of fandom tropes so it's like a warm soupy bath for me: just sink into it.

I love those posts. <3

bb, is yes, baby. Also used a lot when talking about jailbait / age-difference fic.
FLAIL IS THE BEST WORD. It even got to be my Word of the Week, and that means something.
the *________* to me is like, SPARKLY EYES, or HEARTS IN EYES. "THIS IS LOVELY OH GOD".

and yes, Inception has awesome art and really, really, REALLY long fics (Rule Ten is 10 times the words I've written in complete fic so far. D:).

Isn't mulling over all things fandomish fun? Even though I'm currently not really involved in one - well, except for A Game of Thrones, which currently involves no fic- to my knowledge at least- and is mostly squeeing over pics and vids in anticipation of the HBO series- it's still fun to pore over trends and idiosyncracies (sp?).

You might have to write some sort of scholarly work about it all!

You, my dear, wrote the best, and I mean THE BEST fanfic I ever read, King of New Orleans. That thing was definitely good enough for publication. It put you right in the middle of a city full of history. It took us with Viggo, going through his obsession with Orlando and the kids. Add the paranormal accent to it and you've got the most amazing story ever! If you never wrote another thing, this alone would put you at the top of my list of great writers. Bless.

Lobelia wrote some of the best and most mind-boggling lotrips: Up Shit Creek (I looove that one!) and Insects and the one with Jed Brophy!

But she did not write King of New Orleans, that was cee, now [livejournal.com profile] traveller. The story isn't easy to find, but I did find a link for an old archive of it on the Wayback Machine: http://web.archive.org/web/20080312182357/http://www.seanchai.net/kono/

bb has been around for a long time amongst some of my friends, it's not my favorite but sometimes feels right

flail is like squee, very fandomy words!

idek is quite useful, it always conveys a groan and shake of them head to me, sometimes aimed at oneself and sometimes at others.

the long emoticons do nothing for me.

hmm, interesting that you don't find Inception especially experimenty. There are certainly tropes de trop (haha) but there is so much else going on.

I hear you re the WIP frenzy though. I think the whole anon / kink_meme thing is a different direction than I'm used to -- subverting role of author etc ("it was not my idea!" or "it's not me writing!")

It's a bit odd; I'm even considering posting especially to a kink_meme in order to get read. I'm not even sure who reads individual journals in Inception??

I just commented elsewhere on your journal, I found you through a post at inception_ meta. I'm a newbie after some time away and It's been daunting b/c I'm familar with archives. I think the kink_meme is a good place to start, you can de-anon if you want. (I read as a lurker a lot b/c I have no journal and I am allowed to comment as an anon) I have book marked quite a few journals if I like an author or if they have a wips I like. Also, I think there is a newsletter, inception daily that I've found authors on and mementis is an LJ I book marked b/c there are always inception recs and I can sort of keep up. Anyway the point of this post is that I think people with read your LJ if you start writing, like, "Hey, new writer over this way!" Like that field of dreams movie, "if you build it, they will come."

Hey, thanks, 'someone'! It's very interesting (and new) to me how peeps move about Inception fandom in a way that I'm not used to, and the whole anonymous thing. I used to be very jealous of my anonymity, and I guess I still draw a fat line between rl and online life. My pseudonym was my anonymity, but I guess the longer you're in fandom, the more your pseudonym takes on an identity of its own, and now I'm no longer anonymous as Lobelia, in many ways.

So the 'anon' option is like an 'anon' of an anon.

i'm not on lj as often as i used to be, so since i'm here, i'm trolling your lj.

'bb' i think means 'bad boy,' though it seems to have evolved to mean 'baby.'

Very interesting. Bad boy had not occurred to me at all. Listsibs call each other bb, too, so I'm inclining towards the bb interpretation.
