new LJ people icons?

Okay, what is this new LJ thing?

When I type in a name, like lj user wrangler, wrangler, I get this little Japanese-looking icon. And when I type in eyebrowofdoom eyebrowofdoom, she sprouts horns!

Me, I'm just the normal bald lobelia321.

Tell me, wise flist, what is going on?

They're custom userheads that you can purchase from the shop. When you do, they're available to wear for a whole year. I got one, too! :-)

*peers at your TV-head* And once you buy them, can you decide each time whether you want to use it or not? Can you have several on the go at once? Like icons?

Yep, that is what they're called! :-) And you can indeed buy more than one, but unlike icons, you can't pick and choose as you post, you have to go your edit profile page and choose which one to wear and then it's the only one that will appear in all your posts. Like, I have a Christmas themed one that I wore during the holidays but while it was visible while I was wearing it, I don't think it would still be visible now that I've chosen to wear the TV head instead, even if you went back to posts and comments made during the christmas holidays (well, to be honest I haven't actually tested the theory but that's how I understand they work).

Batman! *peers closely* Okay, yes, I can see a mask. But definitely horns: they are growing from the outside of your head (and bat ears grow from the top of the head!). *scientific fact*
