I got so badly burned by my entry fandom that I have never really engaged properly with another one since. The one time I tried, it happened again! So no, not really nostalgic. Though some very good things (especially frienships) came out of it.
I always thought of you as one of the great people in lotrips.
I had no idea about that, so thank you so much :)
I have no emotional resilience whatsoever when it comes to fandom, so I'm very wary indeed. I will probably get more involved in NCIS when I've finished my first fic (which is rather long). But only with some trepidation.
Utterly *adored* my entry fandom! And now that I look on it, most of my OTPs follow that "Jock/Nerd" pairing. I can't quite fit House/Wilson or Spike/Xander into that exactly though. And strangely enough, a perfect match would be Jack/Daniel, but I never felt the slightest urge to OTP them. Odd.
Oh! Also, Sherlock/Watson! And Spock/Bones. So yeah on that "About a thousand" ticky box. *g*
I am pathetically imprinted by my entry fandom but funny, one can get over one's entry fandom, I find, by just moving chronologically through a whole lot of others and then you look back on it all and can actually get nostalgic about some of the subsequent fandoms...
I started out in the HP fandom. These were the times... I still check back from time to time, as it's not dead yet. So I'm sort of nostalgic for the dramacrazy times from way back then, but on the other hand I'm glad I've branched out into many other fandoms to not be too addicted to HP solely. :-)
And as for the pairings... I've realized all of a sudden that I'm actually a fandom slut. The only requirement: the pairing must be fascinating. So, uh. The last text box should be way longer. Just saying. *g*
HP! Like me, your username betrays you, *g*. I still have one million word long opus going in HP so I'm glad to hear that it's not quite dead yet. My readership will be 3.2, yay. HP is such a huge, huge fandom; it's like many fandoms unto itself.
And yeah, pairings. I have OTPs but sooner or later it all ends up in the bucket of 'rare'n'weird' ...
I have fond memories of the early days of WotR, and I'm still good friends with several people thanks to that fandom, but I don't yearn for it. I get a little scared at how jaded I am about things that squicked me way back then! And I had to stop and think to remember that my favorite pairing was Orli and Lij! That made me laugh. Really, I was happy for any and all of them to crawl all over each other. It took me a long time to really get into another fandom (H50), although I dabbled in several others for a month or two including Inception.
How interesting!!! Makes me think about my jadedness or not. I can certainly remember being amazed by things that are now totally whatever... You were Orlijah, hahahah! Good times, good times.
Which Hawaii Five O? I only know the 1960s series. Book 'em Danno, Murdern One.
I am a little bit nostalgic. (Would be more so, in all probability, if there had been more activity in either of my favoured pairings!) Mostly when I think about my innocent little self discovering slash there. :D
Actually, come to think of it? Under "ways my other OTPs resemble those in entry!fandom", you can put "most of them are slashy". :D In addition to often featuring military characters in a subordinate/superior relationship. One of whmo may have some kind of torn-between-allegiances thing going on. Erm. :D
*waves frantically* (Do I know you? How nice of you to visit.) Ah yes, I know the tribulations of having a favourite pairing that nobody writes. So one has to do it all oneself... Yes! Discovering slash! And I was so amazed! All the time! I now have to think hard to remember that. It now all seems so pedestrian. Also, I don't hear the word 'slashy' nearly often enough these days. ;-)
Let's see... I fell hard for ST:TOS the summer of 1980 (I was 13), but I'd been secretly watching Starblazers before that... and also, I'd been obsessive a bit about Battlestar Galactica... and before that I'd hand-copied half of "The Children of Morrow" into a spiral notebook... and before that I'd had the local library get everything Arthur Ransome had ever written - one book had come all the way from Michigan (I lived in Maryland) and I wasn't allowed to leave the library with it, had to come over (I think this was when I was in 5th grade) every day after school for several weeks and read it until dinnertime (I was, and am, a very slow reader)...
IOW, I don't think I had a first fandom, just increasing ability to participate as I emerged from early childhood :-)
Hi, Wneleh! Whoever you are: how lovely of you to visit! *is excited at new acquaintance* Your comment makes me think about the difference between fandom and slash. For me, the twain both occurred at once and sort of overpowered me so it didn't even occur to me to tweak the poll to mean something else!!! All so interesting. :-)
First Fandom was ST when it was ToS! My first tries at fanart were because I couldn't afford to buy anything from Lincoln Enterprises, so I copied all the promo shots in pencil before returning them... Since there was no intarwebs back then fandom came in hand litho'd zines and I couldn't afford them either! When I first came upon fanfic (many years later!) a good friend had to take me aside and explain this whole "/" thing. Then I got into Blake's 7 and became very active in both Fic and drawing and Cons. Although I enjoyed reading the Blake/Avon stuff I didn't write any. I lost my fan virginity to Bodie and Doyle! I slashed those boys like Billy-Oh! Then after a pause for child rearing(about 15 years!) Atlantis hit. Started with Carson/Rodney then Radek joined in and finally John made it to the party too! I think intelligence and wit have always done it for me. Tho' a pretty face never hurt.
You are pre-interwebs!! *worships you in awe* (How did I not know this?? And where is your duck? *looks stern*) You did zines! That word has such a romantic ring to it, for me...! And the word 'LoC': positively exotic!! Fan virginity: I like that term!
omg, child rearing: I hit fandom, slash and child rearing all at the same time. Well, no, t'youngest was 2 but yes, I had to struggle through all of it and now I've come out the other side and think, god, I was sometimes a neglecto-mum when I stayed up till 3 am to read the latest installment of a WIP I was addicted to... And all that hiding of print-outs.
omg RADEK. Yes, intelligence! Wit! Manliness! Oh, and angst. I just love what fandoms do with mature men.
The people, the weirdness, LJ (where I ended up because I came across a website called something with Brothers - brotherly - something. And somehow got an invite code from one of the writers. Or I might be misremembering that; I'm not sure LJ ever used invite codes.)The people!
Not the insane ones. I think I've managed to avoid them.
Closer than Brothers??? Big yahoo group, founded by Brenda and Jo as a break-away from lotrps??? Ah, the days....!
Yes, I got an LJ invite code from viva_gloria! Or no, perhaps I didn't; perhaps this was pre-codes and I just got lured by her? I had no idea what to do with LJ when I first joined! My first post was about lentil soup!
Avoiding insane people is easy on LJ. I find, anyway. ;-)
Well, you know, I'm not really much of a fandom-hopper. I was into Lotrips when I was a final-year student with two hours a week of lectures - I've never had that sort of time to devote to anything since then (OK, I was supposed to be writing a dissertation, but yawnorama or what?)
Now I mostly just enjoy fandoms of two fans or fewer. T'ELF is of course the fons et origo of this. I also like anything that involves people sitting around not having sex at all.
