Techie question

So I haz a nyu laptop. And the nyu laptop (MacBook Luft aka Air) displays comment boxes on LJ with tiny tiny tiny font. I cannot read this font. I can embiggen the rest of the page but the comment box stays tiny.

Any advice, oh wise techie flist??

Hah, I actually thought of this myself and spent some useful minutes of my life downloading Firefox. And then I got sidetracked and looked at Esme and the Laneway's blog (wot u alerted me to!!!) so I haven't yet checked the LJ font issue. :-)

can you embiggen the default fixed-width font size in safari settings?

I've embiggened those. Seems to have absolutely no impact whatsoever. :-(

Are you using Safari?

If yes, try Preferences > Advanced the topmost item says "Never use font sizes smaller than..."

check the box, and change the font size if you need to.

Glad it helped! It's good to have technical help here in the house with me! I have passed the thanks to the other end of the couch.

I find Safari fonts very little & hard to read, and have my fonts set much larger than I do in Firefox. I hardly use it at all these days - I've started using Chrome for the things I used to use Safari for.

Aha, Safari. I shy away from Chrome because it's plastered all over Google and I'm starting to think that Google already has too much of an evil monopolistic empire (not that I don't love that evil monopolistic empire but still). Will re-activate my Firefox and see where that gets me. Thank you!! (*typing a comment in beautifully legible Arial*)

In Safari: Preferences->Appearance->Fixed-Width Font (set to something you find comfortable to look at; I use Courier New, 14-pt)

plus, what someone already said about the "never use fonts smaller than", but it sounds like you're having a problem with the fixed-width font only, and that's browser preferences.

In Firefox: Preferences->Content->Advanced (under Fonts & Colors)->Monospace font, pick something you find comfortable to look at

Bizarrely, it was indeed the 'never use fonts smaller': I changed this to 18 (which seems huge to me but creates a nice-size font) and it worked! Oddly, the fixed-width font did nothing. Or not while I was looking, anyway. Hey, Synecdochic, I miss you! :-)

Hi! I'm still here reading, I promise! I've just switched all my actual journaling over to DW and I don't crosspost anymore, partly because it looks weird to have the boss still crossposting and partly because I just don't trust LJ with any of my content anymore. :) (I am slowly, over time, working my way back through all my old posts-of-value like fic and meta essays and replacing the contents with links to the DW version; I'll likely delete the rest.)

But I do still read everyone, I promise! I load the LJ friends page less often than the DW reading list, but that's still once a day at least. :)

Thanks for tip! (As I type this in beautifully legible Arial.) I am with you on LJ, I truly am, and the more I find out about its evil Soviet, oops I mean Russian (this child of the Cold War just can't shake off that old monniker), bizniz connections, the more uneasy I become. So far, though, nothing has as yet managed to shake me out of my innate conservative inertia. :-( It only took me about 5 years to overcome my mistrust of the new and upload a fic to A03... (Hm, A03 has possibly not been in existence for that long...) Keep fighting the good fight, Syn!!
