I am so completely obsessed with finishing the k/d saga at the moment. It seems more interesting than anything else, even more interesting than looking at t'pretty! I noted a Dominic pic the other day and thought, what? Nothing like my Dominic. I think my characters are running away from their rl counterparts. I'll stay away from pics and interviews until the story is completed. Did hours of research on-line and in t'reference library yesterday and today to back up the hunches I've had. Keep re-reading generous lotr_wip comments and thinking about these people till my brain's about to pop.

I must be up to 90,000 words on this thing by now. Egads. But the end is in sight. I know where they're coming from, I know where they're going. One or two things to clear up. And then to rewrite nearly everything because I'm not 100 percent happy with the pacing nor with some of the imagery. And a dialogue-only bit has got to be turned into dialogue-plus-prose. And the heartstrings cannot be tugged enough in this one -- but it must be oh-so-deadpan.

And I found out all about tubeworms! They are very interesting. They survive not by photosynthesis but by chemosynthesis and are totally independent of the sun. They live down by those hypothermal vents at the bottom of the ocean.

Sea cucumbers are also very interesting but they are not being included in the story after all.

And that's what I'd like to be when I grow up: a logodaedala.

Hmm, I'm almost in the opposite corner here. I'm finding the Monster Fic terribly hard work to write - possibly because I'm not writing in sequence? possibly because it's not very interesting (i.e. plotty) between the sex scenes?! - and can't face the thought of rewriting, which needs doing. This is so totally different from the way I write short fiction, or what I remember about writing the novel .. maybe it's to do with how immersed one can become in the creation.

Maybe I'm just not in the mood.

But I'm very much looking forward to reading yours!

Oh I'm happy now and this is why I posted this in a delirium of amazement -- but this has not always been so! (As you know, I think.) I've been tormenting myself over this since August 2002, and there have been weeks and weeks when the stupid thing seemed to move nowhere and every paragraph I produced was crap and got deleted the next day.

I was given a book for Christmas (or rather, I chose a book to be given) called 'Writers on Writing' (it's excellent, btw) and one of the writers (can't remember name) said that she thought there is a certain amount of shit you have to write before the good stuff comes out. And this is inevitable. So you've just got to keep on plugging on producing the shit -- if you don't, you'll never get to the good bits. Well, I found this very helpful anyway (having been very blocked on this in the past).

- possibly because I'm not writing in sequence?
I didn't write this in sequence. I'm now filling in gaps. I don't think it matters. Some stories write themselves in sequence, others don't. I think if you're bored with one scene that's "in" sequence but interested in writing another one that comes much later or earlier or whenever: always go for the interesting one. Well, that's what I think.

possibly because it's
not very interesting (i.e. plotty) between the sex scenes?!

I tend to think there's no such thing as a not-interesting scene but only scenes that *you* are not interested in. If you're not interested in them and are putting them in out of duty, I would say, ditch 'em. Actually, that's me in a glasshouse throwing stones here, hah. But I have managed to clip some scenes by starting a new chapter or just introducing a sort of fuck-it-all elision, let's move on. And why are the non-sex scenes not interesting? Because the story is so much about sex? Then maybe it doesn't need the inbetween bits, or the inbetween bits are perhaps sexier than you thought at first glance...?

- and can't face the
thought of rewriting,

O god, I know!!

This is so totally different from the way I
write short fiction,

Yes, it is very, very different. There is much more structure needed, and more not-directly-relevant stuff, and more stitching together of scenes, and just more *plot*, I find. But also the chance really to get into people's heads, like you never get in short fic.

or what I remember about writing the novel
Interesting. How was that different?

*pop fizzle*

Tease! I can't wait; it sounds marvelous. Beyond marvelous. Insert big word otherwise meaning marvelous to the nth degree here.

Oh, and there is this gigantic load of Merry and Pip w/ the orcses screencaps that have been posted, and I would have sent you a link... but does that include you not looking at pics? Or do you mean the actors themselves? hmm.

orcses!!!!!

Orcs are exempt from everything!! Send orc link!!!!!

*catches breath*

No, it was your smiley-Dom-icon that I meant, actually, *ggg*. Who would have thought it? What with my obscenely large arsenal of Dom pics on the hard drive... But it doesn't fit my Dom, it's not an illustration to my story, so it seems odd and weird. Heh, I can see that after this k/d is finished, I'll have to write a teeth-fic just to get this icon out of my system (or *into* my system).

But lest you forget: orc link, orc link! Fps pics don't bother me, anyway. I'm not into Dom with a wig. I guess that's why I'm in rps. If I ever write fps it will be strictly bookverse and contain a *black-haired* Legolas, for fuck's sake.

Oh, you're kidding! ahaha! No, I wouldn't have thought that was it... but, oh, look at the darling face! Who cares if he doesn't fit *your* Dom? Kidding, kidding. But... I'm under impression that the man's not only a monkey but an ever changing illusion. Now you see it, now you don't. Always different. So you never know, I guess...

*chuckles* amen to that.

Tubeworms are indeed fascinating. If rather repulsive! Am very thrilled that you are getting on with your K/D, I am so looking forward to this.

Have you ever seen Heavenly Creatures? (one of PJs earlier films?) I haven't seen it for ages and happened to notice in the tv listings that it is on next Sunday (bear with me, there is a reason for me telling you this!) So I was reading the cast list and came upon the following entry:

John/Nicholas Jed Brophy

Ha! It's your orc!! Just thought you'd be interested to know. Anyway, if you've never seen Heavenly Creatures, it is very good and well worth watching.

Yes, I know Jed is in Heavenly Creatures. *sighs tiredly* I posted the HC Jedpic to begin with... But we've been through this on chat!! *g*

But thank you for the heads-up because now I can tape it and drool at leisure!

As I told Gabby just now in the comment above: Orc pics are totally exempt from my picophobia. ;-p

Tubeworms are a bit repulsive and also a bit phallic. Those red things on top are called plumes and filled with haemoglobin! (i.e. blood) And they can lose them like lizards lose their tails.

Not my fault if I sometimes glaze over when you start rattling on about your orcs! I didn't realise you'd posted a pic, but at least I gave you one piece of info that is of use! Go me!

Okay. You have definitely just stepped over the 'too much information' line with this comment. ;)

I didn't realise you'd posted a pic,
I posted *fifteen* or more pics in the Photos folder at CTB. Orcs galore!

Tubeworm stuff is not TMI. It's not information at all, it is *knowledge*.

Here is a picture of tubeworms:

Not attractive creatures. Athough I am sure that, to other tubeworms, they look posiviely gorgeous!

oh lobelia, I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to read your epic!

I noted a Dominic pic the other day and thought, what? Nothing like my Dominic

I'm not writing any fic, but I, too, have quite a fixed view of how dominic is. this is actually influenced quite a lot by we can do more, perfect day and the other fics of that series. so every time I read something that doesn't correspond with my view on him I think 'nah, that can't be true'. uh!

dom or no dom

I can actually cope with quite a few Doms in fic, especially Brenda's fucked-up!Dom and all of Demelza's great-dialogue/northern-boy!Doms. And this k/d Dom is also different from the Perfect Day Dom -- I can cope with that, too. It's just when *pics* start intruding. They're not fiction, ack, these people dare to have real lives... and so forth.

I love your icon, btw. I have surrounded it with a lovely sort of olivey-yellowy-green and it looks like a little meadow every time I see a post of yours. *g*

yeah, I'm also quite fond of it *g*

and I 'can cope' with most doms in fic, too. I add the stuff I find interesting to 'my dom' and ignore the things that I don't like.
I sound like I did this on purpose, it actually just happens!
I also just realized that dom is the only person (of the fellowship) I have such a fixed view on, the others are all rather vague. even orlando (although, he was, like, my first obsession. isn't this amazing?).

I haven't read fun and games yet, I should though, shouldn't I?

Well, there's no 'should' about it. Lots of people don't like it and/or are freaked by it. It's very angsty and a bit BDSM'y and has two thoroughly fucked-up main characters in it plus what can only be called Orli-torture.

I am a complete slave to that series, I'm afraid. I've read it at least twice all the way through and more often for some of the individual chapters, and the thing just takes my breath away.

90,000? That must be hyperbole, surely? (I now am sadly less fluent in the language of literature than you, although am newly craving a dictionary of obscure and precise words. I lfound out what diachronic and synchronic variation were the other day, and am trying to find a chance to drop them into conversation.) Anyway, I'm never going to be able to print all that out...

I feel strange when I see things where the actors are like I write them (e.g, t'dvd), because I suddenly feel ever so guilty about writing them, like I'm trespassing on their 'themness'. Not guilty enough to stop, clearly, because that would then entail writing original stuff, which is Too Hard, but slightly grubby. So different is good, I would say.

encomiastic: written to praise and glorify someone

Oh yes, here it is: encomium = formal eulogy in prose or verse, glorifying people, objects, ideas or events. There's more but I won't copy the entire page into this comment. Encomiastic is the adjective, eh? Pity - it should be encomatose.

Oh, and just above that on the page:

enallage = a figurative device which involves the substitution of one grammatical form for another, e.g. 'to palm someone off', 'to have a good laugh', 'to duck an appointment'.

To *duck* an appointment!! Oh, I could go on... Ahem.

90,000? That must be hyperbole, surely?
I'm afraid not. 'Tis, damn what is the opposite of hyperbole? I shouldn't just copy these words out mindlessly, I should bloody well learn them off by heart. But yes, I counted, and that's about as many words as I have. Then I counted 'Consorted', incl. Epilogue, and that's around 70,000. So if you add the other vampire fics to that, mine isn't *so* long.

I lfound out what diachronic and synchronic variation were the other day
I *love* diachrony and synchrony. *licks both words and concepts* But er, what are their variations? My dictionary doesn't mention those. But Saussure -- I love Saussurean semiotics! And the diachronic axis (the syntagmatic axis of selection) and the synchronic axis (the paradigmatic axis of substitution).

*falls down in semiotically induced swoon*

You can weave this into daily conversation, no problem. I do. You just have to make *friends* with these lovelies. But the other day I wanted to say 'cathected' to my counsellor (or my therapist, as I prefer to refer to her in an American accent) and got shy and groped for another word, instead. Pathetic, I know. I didn't want to appear too-clever-by-half. *shoots self in head*

Anyway, I'm never going
to be able to print all that out...

God, that reminds me: I'll have to... Hm, I'd better go and buy a new ink jet cartridge.

I feel strange when I see things where the actors are like I write them (e.g, t'dvd),
because I suddenly feel ever so guilty about writing them, like I'm trespassing on
their 'themness'.

Oh yes, I know what you mean!!! And in the k/d I started writing about their families - and this all got a bit spooky. I'm almost tempted just to pull the names and re-name them Siegfried and Damien or something. Change their hair colour. And when I start writing about the shape of their *dicks*... well, rps is enough to spin your brain, it really is. And it's best to keep the fangirl part (drooling over pics and such) very much separate from the fanfic-writer part -- because that way madness lies.

But your people are always so wonderfully un-researched and made-up. They are a beacon!

Not guilty enough to stop, clearly, because that would then entail
writing original stuff, which is Too Hard

I know. *grinds teeth* I keep trying, I really do - and it gets me nowhere. But I will batter on. Once k/d is finished. And orc-fics. And more Andy. And, er... Yes. How does one write plots not set in New Zealand or involving m/m innuendo and banter??
