Am I the only one who gets weird email these days? Has TTT brought out all the weirdoes of this world?

School legend!

Lobelia you have no idea how much of an impact your stories have had on
our
school. We stumbled on them by accident in an RE lesson on a 'google'
search. We decided to print one off secretly but didn't realise that
they
were so long! Wheteher they are disgusted in them or addicted to them
everyone loves the stories-and we're big fans of Billy and Dom so we're
all
yearning for a sequel to 'Perfect day'. But currently we are all banned
from
the school computers for printing so much of the stuff off. But we
think
your stories are brilliant. Please keep writng them. You are now a
school
legend!
Love All Saints School (York) year10.

Whatever it is, I don't like it.

I just checked via google, there are indeed two secondary schools in York which are called "All Saints". this of course doesn't really help with the weirdness!

maybe those emails are from some parent who 'caught' their child reading your stories and now wants to find out more about you? but they probably would just have written an how-could-you-this-is-evil email.

I hope every thing turns out to be ok!

The school is real?

Hm, I don't like it. I don't like it at all. May have to put 'for nobody under 18' on each and every page of my website now.

Underage-ness

You don't have to answer this, but what makes you say "I don't like it" - the fact that the people who sent the email and probably read your stories were under 18? Or is it the legal ramifications thereof - especially in light of the action that Warner Bros. has taken against people slashing Harry Potter? I'm intrigued by this email, especially b/c I'm also under 18 and I've been reading slash for going on three or four years.

The main thing I don't like is the weirdness of the email. It is worded in a very odd, half-threatening way -- or at least in a way that is open to multiple readings.

I am also, I have to admit, uneasy about people under 18 reading my stories. I do know a few listsibs who are under 18 (or were, when they started out on this lark) and have met some of them in person, and have no problems at all with those whom I've met or chatted/emailed with. But perhaps those listsibs were a little more discreet and certainly didn't post unnerving emails *involving a school* as above.

If anyone is under 18, I would expect them to act as if they were responsible and a whole lot older, i.e. *not* access sites from school, *not* show fics to parents or other family members who may worry (this happened to a friend who got flamed by an irate mother) and similar.

Okay, just to add some more on why exactly I don't like it. I've just got another email from the same person/persons, and it's quite clear that they are not sending feedback. The emails do not comment on any specific story. They include details that are irrelevant to me and my stories (the person mentions their teachers and their parents, and even admits that the school does not like them viewing this material) - so I can only conclude, that the emailer is writing this in order to unsettle me.

I regard that kind of email as harrassment and I do not like it. It's not feedback. And I don't know why they are telling me about their school life.

Hmm.. I don't like that either.. it's hard to tell if it's a joke, which it definitely could be, or if it's just kids being kids.. either way, it does feel freaky, but i'm always overly apprehensive about that kind of thing.
My advice is ignore it in any case..
*hugs*

Hm, your advice came too late. I didn't ignore. I replied with a very short email, saying something to the effect that all stories on my archive come with a 'for nobody under 18' warning and that if they are under 18, would they please stop reading the fics.

Now I'm thinking I want to put that warning on each one of my Headers, too, for readers who link directly to a fic.

That's a good response though, didn't even think of that... A warning on each header might be added insurance too, shows that you're serious about being responsible.

OK, that is weird. Well, not only should they not be reading them, they are going to get themselves banned from the school network really quickly printing slash off, never mind how long the stories are.

By all means, cover your bases and header every fic - a pain in the arse but it can't do any harm. Having said that, though, if it is true, they are the ones who are going to get in trouble. If they're reading 'porn', that's all the school would care about - they're not going to care about where it comes from.

I can see why it makes you feel weird though.

Hey, you could always phone up the school pretending to be a parent and complain about the lax network security/censors...

Oh by the way I just remembered, you can put in a meta tag on your pages so that google doesn't archive them, that way only people who are within the fandom will find your fic most likely. If you're interested you can find our more here
