[livejournal.com profile] gabbyhope wanted recs, so here is a rec.

"Tounga" and "Dama" by Issa Bagayogo (from Mali); on his "Timbuktu" CD

I have listened to his CDs and especially to these two tracks so many countless times you'd think I'd be sick of them but they touch me emotionally every single time and cheer me up. I just adore this type of music: World Music plus something poppy, lyrics I don't understand (well, actually, I would *love* someone to translate the lyrics for me), intricate things done with instruments and vocals and sound effects, and just two gorgeous melodies.

I love African music and AfroPop too, there's a guy in San Francisco who plays it every Thursday night on the local public radio station (KALW). He interviews a lot of the artists, which can be fun or annoying if they chat too much and don't play enough. I got some Amadou Diallo and Angelique Kidjo, but there's so much good stuff.

Of course! Happy to share.

In addition, you can listen on the Web using Real Audio. The web site, kalw.org is down, but I found the live KALW feed (Real Audio). Kumpo Beat, the African Music program, airs Thursdays 9pm to midnight (PDT, GMT+9). Hmm, I guess that's not so good, 6-9 am in Britain...

I also recommend AfroPop Worldwide, a more polished but shorter show that's syndicated on the US National Public Radio Network.

I'll tape tonight's Kumpo Beat if I can find blank tapes.

Thank you for those links! Unfortunately, the first listening one doesn't work for me, I don't have the software or whatever, and lots of things aren't compatible with Macs. The other one will start streaming in 1 hour, apparently! So I will attempt to listen!

It's not 6 a.m after all but midnight my time!

Heee, heee ;-) Hope you could get AfroPop OK.

Just FYI, the KALW link is for Real Audio, which you get from real.com and it works fine on my little white iBook. We're sisters in Mac-hood too, that's so funny.

Mac is god.

I know that 3/4 of the world is enslaved to PC but I look down upon that human dross with disdain.

It does mean, though, that hardly anything is bloody well compatible. Ah well, we must all make sacrifices.

I have a PC at work and it is just so *counter-intuitive*. It irritates me endlessly.

I'm Mac-geekier than thou, though. You can't imagine what a nerd I am. Got my first Mac Plus in 1985. My desktop and laptop are both Macs. I used to code Mac software, and worked in the industry for 10 years. I alpha test what my friends write.

I waver between being annoyed at Windows for imitating Macs, and being annoyed that they imitate it so *badly*.

Huh. I've never really gotten into this type of thing, mainly because I've never had the chance to. Not a lot of fans or outlets or whatever around these parts. Kazaa has come up nil for a search of this man's name, which sucks, but I'll definitely look around some, if you're so very passionate about it. I'm such a rec whore.

And woohoo, rec'ing! Bring it, yo.

What's Kazaa?

You can get the CDs on amazon. They were in my local HMV.

Kazaa's like Napster... you download it, and by turn you are able to download songs from other users, and they download songs from you. You're also allowed to upload your own bits. It's not just music, either, but movies, videos, programs, software... ahh, I love the smell of illegal happenings around my desk-area.
