Books. But not Borders-type bestsellers piled into stacks but really well-chosen, unusual books for browsing and discovering.

In my dreams? Transcending genre, sort of genlit, a la David Mitchell and Ann-Marie McDonald. In reality? Slash. (Duh.)

Uni and art history. (This is not so much a 'would', is it? Perhaps goes to show how much I actually love my profession. Deep down.)

Issa Bagayogo. A.R. Rahman. World Music but no Latin American.

Do you have views on present vs past tense? Have you written either or both? Which do you prefer to write, and why? Which do you prefer to read, and why? What is, precisely, the different effect of either tense for you?

And I wonder what it's like in those languages that have more than one present and more than one past, like French with its passée simple and Italian with its what-is-it-called-again, but the one with the wonderful endings.

And does present tense necessarily conjure up the *present*?

I'm in a Jed kinda mood.

Did you know that he was a Black Rider in Fotr? As well as warg chief, red-eyed orc, aide to Eomer, winged nazgul-rider and various other humans? He also bought one of the horses from the Lotr stables and spent the next year riding about on it every day and he thinks that Viggo is "the bomb". He has two children (I thought I spied a wedding ring at the TTT NZ premiere) and, I think, he's the snappiest dresser in Lotrips.

Well, aside from Peter Jackson, obviously. *snorts*
