sad about tainted final
Jul. 10th, 2006 03:49 pmI am still shocked about the Infamous Headbutt.

For those not in the know: this is what Zinedine Zidane of France, football god of an entire generation, did to Marco Materazzi of Italy last night. If Cristiano Ronaldo is Achilles (according to t'h), then Zidane is Ajax, slaying the herds of cows, ranting 'they are the enemy', and bringing disgrace onto himself. But he had that fine excuse: 'The gods made me do it.' Which didn't prevent him from impaling himself on his sword some time later. (I read the play last year; it was great but not as good as the one about Clytaemnestra and if I could remember titles and playwrights this post would appear more erudite but I can't be bothered to run up the stairs to check...)
So. I am trying to de-cathect from the World Cup. I did this by obsessively image-downloading C.Ronaldo pics for the past 50 minutes or so. Hm, not sure I have adopted the right method here. I also actually began to watch some of my taped games. No, no! That way insanity lies!!
I am dismayed by the ongoing C.Ronaldo hate. I am intrigued by the fact that the same ref sent off Rooney who sent off Zidane. I can't believe that they didn't send Figo off for his very own headbutt! And I await clarification of what was actually said during that infamous exchange of words that led to the Zidane headbutt. Ah, thus fall the great...
I am still not happy about Italy, despite their startlingly handsome goalkeeper Buffon and their endearingly bearded Gattuso but fair enough: they were the only team to get a real goal (not a penalty), and it would have been tainted to see France hoisting the trophy after that shameful red-card incident. I just feel so sorry for the team mates whom Zidane let down: poor old Ribéry (I love Ribéry! He looks like someone out of Asterix!), Henry, Barthez, Thuram -- what did they do to deserve this? And why are the English all (well, okay, not all) stomping on C.Ronaldo -- why don't people feel sorry for Rooney's team mates who were let down by him? And as for diving: the Portuguese try to do it but the ones who actually do it with success and panache are the Italians. And if people hadn't run up to the ref to point out the headbutt (as C.Ronaldo ran up to Rooney to point out the groinstomp), I would have been upset: of course, people need to run up and shout about that! This should not influence the ref but that is another matter.
The ref, btw, was a hero.

Oh, and P.S. I went to see Pirates of the Caribbean 2 yesterday. It was okay, a fun romp. One thing I realised: my Bloom lust is totally and utterly unrevivable. I kept thinking of the match during some of the too-long action scenes.
