news from the realm of fandom
Mar. 23rd, 2011 12:02 amFor all of my lovely flist sibs who know not what is this Inception fandom thing. Or even: fandom what fandom?
I had been out of any fandom for a little while when this one grabbed me. Here are four more things I noticed that happened while I wasn't looking: new jargon, new acronyms, new typety-types. (Well, new to me!)
• bb. I'm pretty sure this stands for 'baby'... It is very prevalent! Fellow fen call each other 'bb', and they call the boys 'bb', especially when they are flailing over pics of the boys when younger.
• Flail. Now, there was a lot of flailing in lotrips fandom in 2002, and then the flail sort of went away, from my neck of the woods, anyway. So I'm very glad that 2010/11 marks a Return of the Flail!
• idek. I've already mentioned this one; it stands for 'I don't even know'. There are a whole lot of 'I don't evens...' and, as a wise person pointed out in my comments (I can't remember who it was! and can't go scrolling back to check due to laptop limitations, don't ask), there is rather a lot of incoherence: as in, people have to stop sentences 1/2 way through as they descend into flailing inchoateness. Three 'I don't evens...' slipped their way into my latest comment on someone's post so this is catching! (as in: "I don't even." "I can't even.")
• *________________* Long stretchy emoticons. I am interpreting this as a stretched smiley face (but I could be wrong?) and as the equivalent of idek.
What you've always wanted to know is new in Inception compared to previous fandoms and never could be bothered finding out unless you're in the fandom yourself
Well, what is new to me, anyway.
Steps in fandom
Lotrips had fic. And more fic. And teenie slasher fic! (Whatever happened to the teenie slasher? Are they all growed up now, o noes.) And pics! Lots and lots and lots of pics. And tinhats.
My next fandom (not counting Wainthropp), Harry Potter, had looooong fics. That was new to me. Fics that were novels! And fps geekery. Lots of it.
My fandom after that, Stargate Atlantis, had vids! I had not encountered vids before, and I loved vids! (Now, of course, my laptop is too old and decrepit to be able to show me vids properly...) I bought several CDs because of music I encountered via vid!
Then came football fandom and a return to the crazy days of rps. *clutches heart* Nothing was really new here, except the fact that the fandom was so VAST and spanned, liek, the entire globe almost and had lots of men in it and every taxi driver and barber and academic colleague participated.
Inception fandom has very nice art! I am enjoying the fanart! I knew fanart from HP but I'm particularly enjoying this fanart. Also: the return of the WIP! I feel the WIP sort of went out of fashion with the move from yahoo groups to LiveJournal and wasn't much liked but now it's back in the form of comment fic, especially comment fic in kink_meme comms! And comment fic! That's a newbie! Well, there's always been little itty bitty cracky comment fic but in Inception it's been transmuted into an epic art form! And people hang out for the appearance of the next installment in the WIP comment fic!
All of this is interesting to me.
Another thing I've learned is that my handwriting has fallen down the toilet since my lotrips days in 2002. I wrote an entire notebook full of fic last week but do you think I can even understand one single sentence? I'm giving up. It's too frustrating squinting at illegible scrawl. I must develop new writing habits (Alpha Smart Neo? shlepping laptop everywhere? Letraset?).
ETA: Experimental writing. Lord of the Rings rps was full of writing experiments. HP more novelly, football totally straight (as it were!!), SGA quite experimenty again -- or was it just that for me SGA was the writing experiment playground? Inception fandom fairly standard again, full of fandom tropes so it's like a warm soupy bath for me: just sink into it.
