Following on from my German Lesson Nr. One, I realise with great sadness that only people who already knew German were taking the lesson... Ah, I have failed, failed, in my mission to illumine the world.

I fear my lesson-devising skills need to be finetuned further so I inflict yet another one on you.

And no hanky panky this time round! *cracks cane and stares sternly over hornrimmed specs*

Specific terms require direct objects and we're not up to those yet... ;-p

See? Another direct object. And we're not up to those yet, as I just explained.... *sighs tiredly*

Ah, these overly eager students who've read ahead.

heee!!! i actually understood the first lesson, but i did have to hazard a guess as to what "ficken" meant, as we were never taught that one in school, oddly enough.

And here I chose it because of its cognate sound value... The joys of the Indo-European language group!! I could have chosen 'bumsen' which means the same thing and might actually have set off interesting slash-specific associations in people's brains... ;-p

I actually have an Opinion on swearwords in foreign language teaching. I think at some point they are absolutely necessary. I remember being in Florence years and years ago and being ogled and being made rude gestures to by some youths, and this is when I desperately needed a phrase to the effect of 'Piss off'. When I went with a friend whose colloquial Italian was very good and this happened again (as it did all the time - either Italy has changed or my greater maturity is now inspiring fear rather than lust), she threw them a well-chosen line and they slunk off.

Of course, the words 'ich ficke' won't have quite the same effect but we're not onto prepositions yet...

P.S. I gave our remaining guinea pig away on Sunday. It just wasn't getting the love it deserves now that the cats are here.
