Whatever happened to [livejournal.com profile] grab_n_coil(spelling?) (the Vincent/Gregory comm) and [livejournal.com profile] hp_squick???

ETA: Ignore the above. I have now discovered both [livejournal.com profile] grab_n_coil and [livejournal.com profile] hpsquick100. Own stupidity is to blame: I was confused by the (not so) new layout of my userinfo page...

In recent weeks, I have read quite a few rants on a) the evils of Mary Sue, b) the evils of Americanisms in Harry Potter fic, c) the evils of clichés.

Today I read a fic, recced by a someone for its good use of magic. For that reason only, I forged on with this fic to the bitter end but really, I wanted to stop after the first five paragraphs. This is what I found on the first two pages alone:

Read only if not offended by grammar/phrase rants -- author kept anonymous for reasons of politeness )

After reading three paragraphs of this, I was desperate for a good old Americanism or even a blatant Mary Sue. Give me an 'ass' or a 'goddammit' any day if it means I get to avoid the older man and the misuse of lay!!

Title: The Cactus Where Your Heart Should Be
Author: [livejournal.com profile] 3jane
Pairing: Crabbe/Goyle + Draco
Rating: NC-17
Length: 4 pages
Summary: The summer after fifth year's kind of depressing. Draco sulks. Crabbe and Goyle amuse themselves.

Why I liked it:

This is absolutely gorgeous. It's got a wonderful atmosphere, is believable, makes Crabbe and Goyle be sweet, creates hints at very, very good backstory, creates a brilliant dynamic between C/G and Draco (explains everything to me, anyway! is now my canonic fanon) and has, as delicious bonus bits, some absolutely wonderful pieces of magic. A great and unusual evocation of Malfoy Manor. And oh, some lovely, lovely sex. Very well written.
