Stories that I have read recently and liked a lot:

Siren, by [livejournal.com profile] gabbyhope.
Dombilly. Simply and superbly stunning. It meanders and flows and it is one of the best uses of pure metaphor I have read. This is now my favourite by Gabby Hope. It resonates for a long time.

In the Name of Research, by [livejournal.com profile] azewewish.
God, I love this fic. Somehow, when Brenda gets her writing claws into Harry/Karl, sparks fly. This is all about the dialogue and it is brilliantly funny and subversive.

Crimson, by [livejournal.com profile] viva_gloria.
Potc fps: Barbossa/ Sparrow. This is stunning. It is the best fic I have ever read by Gloria. It is plotted nigh perfectly, and has brilliantly convincing voices for both Barbossa and Sparrow. It's still lingering in my mind.

Snooping, by [livejournal.com profile] cupiscent.
Lovely, lovely Dorli. Features Keira as voyeuse. This is beautifully written and beautifully imagined. Sort of soft.

Wipeout, by [livejournal.com profile] sagralisse.
Viggo/Karl. Extraordinary tight control of bdsm'ish activities, and somehow lean'n'mean and sweet all at the same time. Very sexy. (But I do like the old bdsm...)

Reading Glasses, by [livejournal.com profile] cimorene111.
And here I was thinking only Brenda could do really good manly domestic fic. But no, Cimorene has written this, and it's simply lovely.

What you get, by [livejournal.com profile] supacat.
Viggorli. I don't like Viggorli but I like this fic. Very, very real and also a bit unusual.

Turning Forty, by [livejournal.com profile] crazybutsound.
A not-run-of-the-mill Dombilly. Real and melancholy.

untitled non-fandom slash, by [livejournal.com profile] piran.
I was drawn into this. Tight and evocative and full of allusion.

plus some I nominated in my Nominations post but just want to rec them here again )

I have just bought myself my first pair of high-heel boots (and shoes, for that matter) in 24 years. This is partly due to the influence of Miss [livejournal.com profile] badgermonkey who is living proof that you can be clever and hi-heeled all at the same time (something which I have somehow been discounting these past few decades).

Now I need to learn to walk the walk. Because the balance is all different! I feel like Billy in drag.

P.S. The bootlets are beige. I have no beige clothes. I need to buy a wardrobe now. All this stems from being-back-at-work nervosity. As I was trying on the boots, I kept thinking: 'This'll make me look tall and impressive at the front of class.' Not if I topple over balanceless, of course...

You write realistic sex scenes. Wet spot and all.
What kind of sex scene do you write?

brought to you by Quizilla

I sort of suspected this. Even though I've slashed a soft toy. But ever since being told about my "gritty realism" by sundry people, I've become quite pleased by that.

And if you don't stop me soon, I will start quoting Roland Barthes again, this time on the "reality effect"... *g*

*off to write some realistic (??) Desert Prince*

LJ won't let me post Desert Prince. Testing, testing.

ETA: Bugger this. I've broken it up into several shorter parts: still won't post. Does anyone know why LJ will allow me to post these rantings but not the actual fic?

Will try again later. In the meantime, will post to the lists.

fuck this

Here's some gobbledygook. Why won't this LJ let me upload DP? Testing, testing )
Well, fuck.

It appears that LJ will only let me post posts that are around drabble-length, but nothing longer than about 100 words! Same for the lists!!!!!!

*looks around*

Everyone else seems to be posting okay.

Well, this is just too frustrating for words. I meant to finish writing the next fascicle of DP (after the one that's waiting in the wings to be posted) but now I am too frustrated and will go downstairs and cook nasi goreng instead.

*kicks computer*

Well, it appears that everyone else is able to post quite happily, including long posts and fics and all sorts of things. Only I am confined to the two-paragraphs-only debilitating corner of LiveJournal, it seems.

So: still no Desert Prince able to be posted. It's only six pages in Word! I've posted heaps longer things than this in the past!

*grits teeth in frustration*

Well, I'll just have to post the icon all by its oddy knocky self for the time being then. *pouts*

I just tried posting a very short *comment* in reply to [livejournal.com profile] orlisbunny and got this mysterious error message:

[Error: Undefined subroutine &LJ::Talk::Post::talkargs called at (eval 225) line 64, line 264. @ sheila]

????

I'm going to give up on the web tonight. It's obviously some 9-11 overload. Email is taking ages, too. I will go and watch the rest of *Lagaan*.
